How to Save Money at PetMed Animal Health Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Absolutely fantastic vet clinic in Dubuque. I have been using this clinic for 9 years and couldn't be happier with the staff and service. Dr. Hellert bought the practice a while ago and we adore her and Dr. Tigges. My 3 dogs are always happy to go in and it is so wonderful that they now offer home visits, a life saver for someone who doesn't want to wrangle 3 dogs in the car. All staff are exceptional and it is great that they also offer grooming services. When the unexpected happens and you need to get in quickly they are always very accommodating. Our eldest dog passed away in July and the staff and clinic were wonderful and supportive to us in a very difficult time. Our new puppy is a huge fan too!

The staff at PetMed have gone above and beyond to help us make informed decisions about our furry friends. They have provided top notch care for our dogs and cats. We love how Dr Hellert takes her time to bond with the animal as well as to figure out potential health concens. The staff at PetMed are incredible and truly make you feel like you are making the best choice for your pet!!!

Amended- We stopped going here when the business was sold. Customer service went away and we never met any of the vets. They had no interest in current clients. This was an awesome place for pet care with Dr Johnson. When she left, we followed Dr Mundt out to Peosta.

When I lived in Dubuque, Allison helped me when I was rescuing cats. She did the spay/neuter and I paid for the shots. She was very good with me. She had one office girl that was a bit mouthy. But, everyone else there was always kind and helpful. We moved about 12 years ago. I hope that she is doing well.

I just moved here from Chicago, we looked for a vet that would be our new doctor in Dubuque for both of our senior dogs. We came to this vet and experience was normal as a check up. They explained that our senior dogs needed some teeth cleaning and some medication to improve their healthy living. We were about to spend over $1000 for each dog on teeth cleanings. The meds were a separate item to our cost. Researching and looking into the prescription pricing we were thinking maybe we can find a cheaper price. We found 800 petmeds for a cheaper price on a monthly subscription basis. We asked the vet to help get us consent to a prescription approval so we can receive it from petmeds but they rejected helping us and gave petmeds a hard time. It was 50% cheaper and the vet became spiteful. We stopped our teeth cleanings and looked into other vets. The vet didn’t want to even give us our files since we went to another vet. This place does not care about your animals, it’s all about the money for them. I will for sure make sure everyone knows not to go there since I work with plenty of people. Update: The response to a 1 star review is as if you were victims of abuse, from what? My review, because you tried to abuse the cost of a animal that is dying. Plus you called my job to state I gave you a bad review and call it abuse. You sound like a company KAREN. You don’t like what you read about your company than self reflect and look inward to your leadership and team and fix the issue. Not play the victim and call other peoples place of employment.
