How to Save Money at Blairs Ferry Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

On 06/06/2023 we took our 11lb Miniature doberman pincher. To the hospital for a wellness exam, Rabies vaccination, Booster shot, And a nail trim. Doctor Theresa streeper Anton Was the doctor who clipped are dogs nails.. My mom immediately noticed that her eyes looked a little funny. Like maybe she was on something. During the nail clipping process, the doctor clipped the dog's toenail all the way to the meat. The dog was not sedated nor Did she have permission to clip the dog's toenail completely off. I called the clinic, and the doctor denied that she even cut the dog's nails. And hung up on me. I immediately called back and told Her that I had the receipt right in front of me and she said the only way That she would have clipped the dog's nail completely off as if there were Some type of infection or fungus and the dog would have been sedated for This process. She admitted this on her own. I called back to tell her that I was bringing the dog back. So that she could see what she Had done and I was threatened with the police if I came back. Anybody with any type of common sense knows that you don't cut a dog's toenail completely to the meat. We will never return to this clinic again. And I Would highly suggest if you don't want your animals abused to take them to a different clinic.

Our grooming experience was so positive. The groomer was concerned with how she should treat our dogs so they were comfortable and happy a absolute dog whisperer. The pets came first but she was totally accepting of what we wanted. Understanding that our dogs are difficult but able to be kind 👍🏻

I was in a bind and needed someone to watch my dog while I left town for a wedding. This clinic had availability so it worked out well. When I picked her up I could tell she was well taken care of. I will be boarding here again!

I've had several dogs cared for by Dr. Lemme (retired) and Dr. Streeper. Dr. S is very caring and unlike other facilities is not looking to run up the tab. Have about 20 years with this practice - no plan to change. CEC

I've taken several cats here in the past couple of years to see Dr. Streeper and it has been a positive experience every time. She has always treated me and the animals well. But today I had the displeasure of meeting Dr. Mangold. I brought a friend's cat in this morning because she had to work. We both thought Robin would be seen by Dr. Streeper but she was in surgery so I got Dr. Mangold instead. For the entirety of the visit Dr. Mangold was short, rude, talking down to me and the cat's owner, and handling Robin rough. I had to put the cat's owner on speaker a couple of times so she could give permission for treatment, during each of these call Dr. Mangold was making faces, rolling her eyes, and making short remarks as my friend asked about next steps for Robin and about the cost of medications. Next, Dr. Mangold came back into the room to administer medication. Before I could react she grabbed Robin's crate and lifted it nearly straight up and down and began trying to shake Robin out of his crate. The door was up against the table so there wasn't even room for him to get out. I was too shocked to say anything so I tilted the crate down and lifted him out but I was appalled. I have never seen an animal treated this way by a vet but Dr. Marigold will never touch one of my animals or any animal I bring in again. If you go here, make sure you're seen by Dr. Streeper.
