How to Save Money at Ankeny Animal Health Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
My husband and I traveled from out of town to come to the Ankeny Animal Health Clinic as the reviews and word-of mouth were all extremely positive. We brought our two cats for a procedure and we couldn't be more pleased with the care given and overall professionalism from all of the staff. They were extremely COVID-safe and made sure our fur babies were taken great care of. Dr. Vandenberg did the procedure on both cats and they are both happy, healthy and healing quickly/nicely. He was very informative on how he was going to do the procedure and what the after care looked like. My husband and I would recommend this clinic to any animal lover.

Staff is friendly but the cost is absurd. I can get my animals similar procedures at half the cost just down the road. Didn’t realize this until I spoke to someone about how much this vet costs…

This was my first time taking my small dog (shih tzu) here. The staff was so great - explaining everything to me, and providing options for my dog’s treatment. Their approach is great, such as trying something first before moving on to the next step. My dog’s health is already improving. I found their pricing to be reasonable. Lastly, they treated my dog so well and made him feel at ease. I was very impressed!

Generally I don’t leave a review for businesses unless I have a horrible experience, but this is an exception for me. Ankeny Animal Health Clinic has been amazing to work with. When we first moved to Ankeny and had to get our dogs vaccinations updated I called several vets in town for quotes and Ankeny Animal Health Clinic was by far the most affordable, when one of our dogs had an early morning emergency they squeezed her in and got her all taken care of, when our other dog was recently injured and had to have surgery done out of town they have been amazing at answering all of my neurotic questions and easing my dog mom anxiety. They have been so responsive to emails and have not pushed any unnecessary appointments on us which has no doubt saved us a ton of money. They genuinely seem to care about our pets and we will be bringing our business back to them for many years to come! Thank you Ankeny Animal Health Clinic staff!!!

If you have a pitbull don't go here. So disappointed in how they treated our dog. Because he has a big boy bark Dr. Grim labeled him aggressive in the paperwork and said they were gonna require a muzzle. Then tried to joked about the situation. Also they did no warm up trying to get to know him or get him comfortable with his surroundings. He might be a 100lb pitbull but hes a big baby and scared of everything. We won't be back and we will be letting all our friends who own pits to never go here.
