How to Save Money at Kihei Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Hellsen is a wonderful holistic vet. She has helped my dog, Shaka, recover quickly from a serious health crisis. She uses acupuncture and Chinese herbs and a customized diet. Her focus is root cause resolution, working from an understanding of how to assess and strengthen and balance my dog’s constitution. Shaka has come to trust her and can relax and accept the needles. I’m very grateful to have found her, as this is how I have managed my health my whole life and it has worked very well for me. She is clearly both knowledgeable and kind and caring. Not only is Shaka back to acting like a healthy 3 year old dog, but her lab results confirm that she has responded beautifully to the treatment. My prayers were answered when I was afraid for Shaka’s life!

Scheduled an appointment for our dog to be fixed. They required a check prior to fixing. At the time of the check up the vet wanted to do extensive blood and liver work since our pet had liver issues at birth that has since been resolved. The issue was she was unwilling to accept the results from blood work performed by our other vet just 3 months ago. She first recommended additional testing which was odd because it wouldn't change anything about the procedure. We both work in the medical field and she was unwilling to intellectually explain her reasonings for this. However, it was only recommended, so we declined and asked for her to call us if she had anything else she wanted to discuss but we'd keep our original date for fixing our puppy. 2 weeks later we called the last business day before her scheduled fixing date and we're informed that the vet had canceled our visit. When we spoke to the manager, he said we emailed you rather than called but we have no email. We asked him to describe the reason for cancellation and he just said they wanted to do over 5 different panels of testing before they'd fix our puppy. Let's be very clear here. 1. The vet was unqualified and lacked basic communication skills. 2. Canceling an appointment after being verified and having no record and not being able to be shown any record of this is unprofessional. 3. Trying to excessively charge for basic surgeries by requiring 5 different test is insane all of which wouldn't change the outcome of the procedure. AVIOD AT ALL COST! SCAMMERS

Maui calls to a variety of people, no small number of them dog owners. The process is neither simple, nor inexpensive, but it assures your animal is in top health when joining the island population. Karen and the team at Kihei Veterinary Clinic made this process run as smooth as silk. The value lies in the preparation and process-guidance assistance provided. With Karen's help, the complex process back East as well as interaction with the state of Hawaii went off without issue. I had all my paperwork ready for the friendly folks at Hawaiian Airlines who spirited Liam The Dog away with great care. LTD was with Karen before I even had my suitcases! Cheers to Hawaiian Airlines and Karen H. from Kihei Veterinary Clinic!!! One last comment: folks, note that all this was done days before the novel coronavirus drove the shut-down and quarantine periods - AND - it was all accomplished with the appropriate PPE before anyone was told they should use it. Well done folks, well done.

This vet clinic has been around for quite some time and has lived up to its reputation as being a hospital institution to bring your pets. The techs were knowledgeable and the doctor was super nice. One star off as I felt the general examination wasn't as thorough as I would have liked. Overall a good experience.
