How to Save Money at The Honolulu Pet Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
The entire staff here is friendly, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to work with for the health care of my Malshi! They are open 7 days a week and also provide after-hours emergency care if needed! I am really happy with the service and care my best friend receives to stay healthy! I highly recommend The Honolulu Pet Clinic!

Dr. Hsu is GREAT along with any Vetenarion that my cats had appointments with Wait time is not too bad. Great front desk service in all 3.5 years of appointments. Great follow up by the staff if needed. The cost of cat nail cuts are extremely high, but since I got all the cats there, I might as well. VET TECH did a Sani Shave on the wrong cat on a last visit but Sean let me bring the right cat back for a free sani shave. Vet tech also cut one of my cats nails too short that it bled but we were not charged for it. I live blocks away so it is convenient and everyone is great for the most part!

I took some time because I wanted to really reflect on the experience I had at Honolulu Pet Clinic before leaving a review. I took my dog Hoss in to see Dr. Hsu. He was very kind and actually ended up doing X-rays for my dog for free. We left that day paying for the office visit and some other pain supplements. Dr. Hsu unfortunately agreed that my dog needed to be put down. I went home and of course started having second thoughts so I scheduled another appointment this time having to see Dr. Kondo. Dr. Kondo did not lay one hand on my dog or complete any type of testing but I was charged the $60 again for that office visit just to be told that he agrees that my dog needed to be put down. So come to the day of, I took Hoss in to have him be put down. While I was crying, they gave me a paper where I agreed to pay $350 to receive his ashes back or they just cremate with all of the other animals. As I'm sure for most people here in Hawaii, $350 was a lot for me but of course I couldn't stomach not getting my dog back. So we get through the experience, and I will say the staff was all incredibly nice to me that day. Three days later I had to go back to take my other dog, Kula, in to see the vet. When we arrive they try to put us in the same exact room where we watched Hoss die just days earlier. We requested a new room which they gave to us. But prior to this not one staff member even remembered me or the fact that I just put my dog down. After checking out that day- I was made aware that I had an outstanding balance of $630. They charge you the $350 for the retrieval of ashes and then another $300 just for the procedure (of course including an office visit fee). They did not tell me this but of course my fault for not asking prior to them killing my dog. On top of our outstanding balance, for Kula's appointment that day we were charged $350 and literally all they did was take one cotton swab to her ear, gave us 2 weeks of allergy pills, and then of course for the office visit. After a couple days, they call me to check in on Kula (which they don't even call her the right name). After this, they sent me a card in the mail addressed to the wrong person about their condolences for Hoss. I understand that vets are expensive. I have unfortunately had to go to multiple vets but I have never been to a vet office where it's so clear that they truly only care about the money. I swore that I would never step back into this office because after this trip it was so clear to me that they don't actually care about their patients. They care about your money and making sure they get as much of it from you as you can. Dr. Hsu is a great doctor and none of my negative feedback has anything to do with him. I appreciate his kindness during a hard time, but I hope that someone will see this review and understand the financial burden that comes when you have to lay your dog to rest and maybe do some due diligence and look around at different offices to compare pricing.
