How to Save Money at Fort Shafter Veterinary Activity
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
If you have the option to go somewhere else please do for your own sanity. Moral of the story is Jodi sucks and has a bad attitude, the employees are all on different pages including the vets, they overcharge for appointments, and they are unorganized with their scheduling. If you want to hear the full story Our experience with this vet has been overall terrible. It started when we called to schedule a health certificate for our pup due to PCS orders. They said he would need 3 vaccines and one is a 2 part vaccine and they can’t give vaccines on the same day that they do health certificates. Therefore we would have to schedule for 3 appointments and pay 3 exam fees. When we go to the first appointment they tell us that they actually can do the health certificate on the same day as the vaccines. We verify with the vet tech and the vet to make sure this information is correct. Before scheduling our next 2 appointments, we ask them to have the manager contact us regarding the 3 exam fees. When he calls he tells us the 2 vaccines we were scheduled for were optional for travel and that all we needed was the health certificate and that they had to do a company meeting because not everyone understood their policy. One vet would do shots on the same day as health certificates and another vet wouldn’t. They were all on different pages. We only need one appointment for a health certificate. We verify with the manager before hanging up that we would see them at 1440 on our planned date. Come the planned date we are getting ready to go to the vet and we get a call at 1400 saying we are late and that we missed our apt. We said no we did not and that we were heading over there now. Jodi (the terrible receptionist) said there is not a doctor here to look at your pet. We then asked why we were scheduled on a date where there were no doctors to do health certificates. And if we could speak to the manager again. We were then told there was no manager there and that all managers were unavailable for a week because there was at a training and that there was nothing they could do for us. Mind you we were flying out of Hawaii in 3 days at this point and they knew this because Jodi annotated this on our dogs appointment. We tried to plead with them to schedule us on one of the next 2 days since we were leaving in 3 days and had this appointment scheduled for 2 weeks and they told us they had no appointments available. Both me and my wife wrote in our pup’s appointment in our own calendars… we both had 1440 as his appointment time. We believe they fat fingered the appointment on their side. Long story short we were lucky enough to find a brand new vet that would accept us the next day with 1 day before we left the island. If you are using this vet just be aware of your appointment time(maybe ask for an appointment slip?or text?), verify with multiple employees before leaving (especially if traveling), and be aware no matter if you come in a week after your last appointment… there’s ALWAYS an exam fee(most vets do not charge this).

I recently needed assistance with one of my pups. Jody went above and beyond in calmly explaining my options. I really appreciated her help especially when I had made a mistake in scheduling with them. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful. Grateful!!

The staff at this clinic are the most friendly and extremely knowledgeable in everything my pups needed for traveling. Pretty sure my two babies like Jodi more than they like me, which makes me so happy to know they are in excellent hands.

Can't say enough good things about Jodi, she was super sweet and helpful during a very stressful time as we were in a rush to leave Hawaii. She explained all the necessary paperwork etc. we would need for our fur baby and went above and beyond! She is a wonderful asset!
