How to Save Money at Bush Veterinary Neurology Service (BVNS) - Woodstock

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Neary is excellent and I appreciate his team. He delivered some very difficult news regarding my sweet Serena and I appreciate him giving me space when I started to get emotional in the room. His technicians helped me get her to the car and I appreciate them checking up on her the following week even though I ultimately had to let her go due to a very poor prognosis. Hopefully, I won’t need his services anytime soon but at least I know my other pups will be in good hands if it comes to that.

I cannot say enough good things about this practice. At the age of 1 our dog Daisy (GSD) started having seizures and for the next 5+ years we worked through her epilepsy with Dr Neary and the great staff at Bush Neurology. They always took the time to work with us and discuss all possible courses of action. They listened to us as owners and helped us consider all care options with a dog that was highly seizure prone. In the end, after over 5 years, they provided companionate care when we had to make the hardest decision. I truly felt like they were a partner in our dog's care the whole time. Thank you for all you did for Daisy.

Dr. Akin and her team have been so wonderful with me and Lily! After our previous neurologist was so hard to get ahold of, Dr. Akin's promptness and kindness has been amazing. Every time we go, I get a print out about the visit, the treatment plan, and exactly what I need to do. Dealing with Lily’s seizures has gone from being disruptive and panic-inducing to just another fact of life and I’m so thankful I found these guys. 💕

Let me preface by saying that I desperately had hoped to be one of these five star review experiences like you read on other reviews. Regrettably, that was not the same experience that I received., I’m being very generous in offering a three star review, considering the service or lack there of which was received. Like many of you before I even entertained coming to this practice I read a lot of reviews. Normally by the time you’re going to see a specialist you’ve already spent quite a bit of money on regular veterinarian services and you’re desperate to find an answer. I came to push veterinary practice because I needed a local expert to walk me through and give a second opinion on my dogs MRI that he had just a month prior at University of Georgia. I wanted to understand what was happening because my dog suddenly was not able to walk out of nowhere, after being diagnosed with cognitive canine decline, it appears that any ailment that comes on will be swept under that rock and just put the bed the very short amount of time that we actually physically were with the veterinarian he was lovely, engaging, and seemed very knowledgeable. The staff is overwhelmingly, wonderful, friendly, and kind, I went there specifically because neurology covers vestibular activities such as your dog suddenly not being able to walk and for $600 what I got was a report in a letter form directed to my primary veterinarian via email and I never even had a follow up phone call no instructions for follow up care nor ready the medication’s even correct. When I reply to the email copying me on the report sent to my Matt I was shocked to see that it immediately got bounced back because it’s a do not reply email so there’s no way to communicate with these people, in the 10 minutes that I met the veterinarian I believed that there was some promise that maybe I had found a local partner to help me figure out what is going on and explain things to me that I inept to understand. However, once he swiped my credit card for $600 and walked out the door I never heard from them again until I got copied on an email sent to my veterinarian who didn’t even refer me. I was self referred. I feel like I was left with a lot of unanswered questions, and no reasonable Recommendations moving forward other than prognosis is guarded due to my dogs disorder what I took from the report was that a referral could be made from physical therapy. I googled physical therapy for dogs and figured out how to do it myself in about six minutes and then for days, I was able to get my dog start walking again, nobody at this practice took the time to explain anything for $600 nor did anyone say look here some activities you might want to try or any of that. I thought desperately wanted to be a five star review or for this particular practice because I had so much faith in them, and unfortunately, that faith was miss placed and I feel like I could’ve very well put that $600 towards some actual benefit for my pet . I really enjoyed reading these five star reviews of his practice, and it brings me overwhelming amount of joy to know that so many animals have been helped and so many happy customers. Unfortunately, I’m just not one of them.

Dr. Neary was kind to us as he explained our dog Baileys poor prognosis. We felt like he was knowledgeable and explained things in a way that was kind and made things clear for us. While Bailey unfortunately could not be saved we had a good experience here.
