How to Save Money at Dogwood Veterinary Specialty and Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had an emergency with my pet and they were able to get her in right away. The facility is beautiful and clean. The staff are very friendly and thoughtful. The Doctors (we had 3), were all very knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. I read the previous reviews AFTER we came in and was, frankly, a little concerned. However, after my experience, I would give them the highest marks. If you have an emergency with your pet, this is the place to go. Pet emergencies are stressful and this entire team was kind and helped reduce the stress. I thank the Dogwood team for their help!

Just picked up my baby after having a snake bite and staying for 24hours. I will say that the staff responded right away after we signed in and they are very knowledgeable however the hospital is very disorganized and I was highly upset at the lack of communication. The hospital needs to understand that communication is just as important because us parents are scared to death given the emergency circumstances. Otherwise the estimate they provided in the beginning was very accurate compared to the final bill and staff was very friendly.

We are immensely grateful to Dogwood for their exceptional care of our beloved Kali girl. Doctor Stan and the staff showed unwavering compassion and expertise, keeping us informed and ensuring her comfort during a difficult time. Despite the expense of emergency care, they offered flexible payment options. We are forever indebted for the comfort of knowing Kali was in the best hands. Thank you!

I cannot say enough positive things about Dr Stan Veytsman and the entire staff at this hospital! We talked to 2 other surgeons in our state of Florida and after one video call with Dr Stan, we knew there wouldn’t be anyone else we would have do Enzo’s CCL surgery. The family drove 8.5 hours there and back and we’d do it again without hesitation. They were all attentive, compassionate and took great care of our dog. Dr Stan has followed up on Enzo’s progress consistently since we have been back in FL. We couldn’t be happier with the results (Enzo is enjoying life again) and we would recommend Dr Stan and the staff at Dogwood without hesitation.

Very clean and a really competent staff of doctors and techs. here. If I were a dog or cat, I'd have my human owner bring me here. I work in the medical field for humans, and this is the "Grady Hospital " for pets. Go here even if it is a little bit more out of your way cause there is nothing better. They were open at 3am for treatment for my 5 yr old Australian Shepherd Cattle Dog. I will not ever leave this doctor and staff. They know which end of a dog is up. Dr. Mcall, You're da'BOMB!!!! Right hand salute from a 82nd Air Born Officer... You've earned your Silver Star the hard way.... You Go!!!
