How to Save Money at Hartwell Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First of all I want to start this by saying I have 6 animals - 3 cats & 3 dogs. Our first baby has been seen by Dr. Keifer since she was a puppy - 6 years ago! He truly shows the animal so much love and grace, even gets on the floor with them to give kisses, and extra lovin. This speaks VOLUMES on his character as a vet. The staff is lovely from the moment you walk in the door & have shown me so much compassion in some trying times. They do their best to work our babies in the schedule if we have an urgent matter. Megan has always been so sweet and understanding. Even in times we’ve had emergencies and couldn’t be seen here & go elsewhere, we quickly realize how lucky we are to have Dr. Keifer as our vet.

I have never gone to such a heartless Vet with any of my fur babies as this Vet. We took our 10 yr old Lab to see Matthew Kiefer We told him our girl wasn’t herself and he sold us some hip chews. We took her back a couple weeks later with heavy breathing, unable to get up, and lethargic. He gave us an antibiotic and steroids This was on a Friday. It didn’t help. By Monday she declined and started bleeding internally. We knew it was her time and called to have her put down. We were told that they were booked and would talk to the vet to see if he could change around the schedule We Waited 3 hours and no one called us back so we called them. He wanted us to drop her off and keep her overnight to run tests We told them we didn’t want to put her though all that (we had another lab with the same illness) and we were told he was too busy and book but we could drop her off in the morning (Tuesday) and he would put her down sometime next week. This is Monday and why would any Vet think we would just drop her off and not be with her????? I couldn’t believe they actually said such a thing. I would never recommend this Vet.

We had an awful scare with my fur baby ! She's a 12 yr old boxer and she suddenly had a terribly swollen eye and couldn't stand up and walk in a straight line , she kept tumbling over. They got us in so quickly as walk ins !! The doctor was SO INCREDIBLE!! He was so gentle and even got down in the floor with Harley (fur baby) he comforted her as she was giving him trouble growling and hiding ! Lol turns out she had a crazy ear infection!! Thank goodness that's all it was !! For the environment and care and immaculate facility , the price was incredible!!!

Have loved Dr. Keifer and his staff. Dr. Keifer has gone above and beyond for our dogs. He’s worked us in last minute on multiple occasions for emergencies, including the last one that turned out to fortunately not be an emergency. Our senior dog Max has been struggling with arthritis for a couple of years now. A few weeks ago, he wasn’t able to get up or move for hours and I thought it might be time since he wasn’t eating or using the bathroom. They worked us in and fortunately by the time we got in for our appointment time he was up and around again. But Dr. Keifer had additional pain meds to help him instead of even considering putting him down despite struggling earlier that day. Thankful for a vet that has gotten to know our dogs and wants to try everything possible to keep them with us as long as possible.
