How to Save Money at Hill Top Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my fur baby in yesterday for his annual visit. Poor baby has anxiety and even though he was medicated, freaked out while they had him in the back, but they took good care of him and got everything done. They called today to check on him. He’s sore, but otherwise doing well. Thanks so much to the great staff.

As a quick update: I greatly appreciate the vet that saw my Zoey girl that day and I greatly appreciate him calling and reaching out to me today. It has been a gut wrenching and traumatic loss for me and my family. I miss my girl so much. I hope that he follows through in talking with the front office staff. I do believe he will. I wish a deeper investigation had been done regarding what was going on with Zoey, but understand we cannot always catch everything. I wish it had not happened that way. Thank you. I have enjoyed bringing our two dogs to Hilltop since moving here 1 1/2 years ago. I always felt like they cared and were concerned about my dogs. I especially liked Dr. Atkinson and all the techs were extremely loving and kind to my dogs. I have also liked the staff. Unfortunately I am not as happy with them at the moment since last Saturday morning our boarders called us to let me know that my 15 1/2 year old dog was unable to walk, was not eating, drinking, was shaking and drooling. I was 3 1/2 hours away and knew she needed immediate care so my dad drove 1 1/2 hours to come and pick her up to bring her where she needed to go to seek medical attention. I wanted her to be seen by a vet that knows her and she was comfortable, so called Hilltop and they coldly told me they were at capacity. I explained to them that she may die and they said they could squeeze her in at 11. I understand they are not an emergency facility, but my dog was one of their patients and Blue Pearl was closed and St Francis was not taking patients. I was really surprised by the nonchalant statement and that they could just say to me that they’re at capacity when we were racing home to get to my dying 15 year old girl. I also understand there was only one vet there and everyone needs to be seen and everyone has a schedule. I needed more than anything to have her cared for properly and compassion for her and myself. My dad was able to bring her there at 11, and I arrived when they were wrapping up at 12. When I walked into the room, my dog was not herself. They vet said it was stress and pain. I was surprised by this since my girl never had a problem boarding. I never was able to speak with the vet, just a technician and what my dad relayed to me from the vet. I tried to trust what they said, but when we got home, my girl did walk, but was weak. Falling and leaning, wouldn’t take medication, drink, or eat food. We syringed her medication and let her rest. I had a feeling they got it wrong. She wasn’t just stressed. The following morning I loaded my 2 and 5 year old into the car, and carried my 15 year old fur baby to the car bc she would no longer drink, eat, or walk. I drove to SC Emergency vet for evaluation and they told me that she appeared to have had a stroke or brain tumor causing a stroke on Saturday morning. How did they miss this? My girl ended up passing away and there was too much neurological damage. I’m lucky to have had over 15 years of life with her, but I’m heartbroken about how this occurred and how Hilltop did not reach out to check on her or send their condolences. I’m so disappointed with them at this time. I had positive views about them and now I’m just broken. I wish my girl could have gotten better treatment and understand everyone is human. Maybe she wasn’t showing signs at the time of stroke; or maybe they were in a rush and they weren’t looking thoroughly and focused on the wrong things. I am so sad and heartbroken and wish my girl and I had gotten a little more compassion, love, and follow through. I’ve cried for almost a week straight. I guess my point in all of this is that this is a great vet facility, and I have been happy overall, but I’m saddened by their lack of follow through, compassion, and willingness to give the highest level care for my girl. I was completely lost what to do that morning. I needed her to get help and was relying on others to try and get her that help. She passed away and I suppose it was her time, but I still think there should have been more understanding and compassion.

We just switched over from Greenbrier and had our first appointment. I feel a major difference with the care of our cats. Dr Carver in particular took exceptional care to reduce our cat’s anxiety during the visit.
