How to Save Money at The Village Vets Decatur-Ponce

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had a wonderful first time experience and felt very comfortable with how they cared for my pet. Our little old lady was very comfortable, which was a great sign! 🐾Highly recommended 🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴

Great vet. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Great service. Had both my dogs neutered there and one had hernia repair. Dr Franco is a great surgeon. Other doctors have been wonderful too. They also have a great Emergency Hospital, which I have been to a few times. They are all the best, would not go to another vet.

The fastest vet visit I’ve ever experienced and we were out of the office in 40 mins. I praise Dr. Buck for his warmth and kindness throughout the appointment and he never seemed in a rush to get me out the door. He provided a list of dental care items for my 4.5 year old dog to ensure she wouldn’t need a cleaning anytime soon. The reason I only gave a 3/5 stars is due to a few reasons. My dog is nervous in new environments and can be reactive at times to other dogs. When we came in the front desk was super cold and unwelcoming. She asked us to go to a scale where a puppy was in between. She didn’t seem to care about my dogs anxiety until she realized she was not willing to move. She then suggested we go to the back and use the scale there. As I was checking out, same cold attitude, and just collected the money without explaining what the packet of paperwork she laid out was. I wasn’t too bothered by the appointment UNTIL I needed to refill my dogs heart worm medication. I sent it to chewy because their online pharmacy does not indicate the price, it’s a form to request a refill. I get a notification from chewy that it was not approved and I’d have to mail the perspiration in. I emailed the office and had to ask twice why it wasn’t approved until they said that they don’t carry inceptor plus (one of the biggest brands) and I would need to mail it in. I think they’re customer service could be improved considering that their vets are so good. Not sure if I’ll come back next year but it’s close by to my home which makes it easy.

I brought my Blue Tick hound Booth in on Monday for his yearly wellness check . He's been itching alot lately , I figured it was the heat. Dr. Buck recommended an impression test , which indicated that he had an infection . Although Booth , who is the handful his name suggests , Only left it ( e collar ) on for 24 of the recommended 36 to 48 hours to keep him from licking himself and spreading the infection. Wow kinda went off track there. The techs were great and very patient with my challenging senior dog , who doesn't like help. Nobody made me feel like a bad mom , because my dog won't let me give him a bath.

My cat cut me from me having to put him in his carrier and of course from being scared my hand was bleeding pretty badly upon arrival and the team made sure to take care of me first I really appreciated that. I do feel like the consultation fee is high but I also feel like they do a great job of taking care of your pet....
