How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my dog in on 9/5/23 for acute vomiting and diarrhea. Never once did I see, speak or interact with the Dr on staff directly. The tests ran on my dog were minimal instead of broad. I even asked why they opted not to run a full blood work up when the symptoms would make most think to do so. I was give two RXs and only given instructions on administering, but no explanation regarding potential side effects which there were plenty of. Within 5 hours- I had to take my dog to the ER. For another immediate $500 spend. Why would they have not run a full blood panel, explained things more thoroughly, or opted for more tests to rule items out since I was already there? Makes zero sense and I will NEVER GO BACK.

Took a dog with anxiety there, but they only do drop off appointments, and my dog was unable to tell the vet the details of his anxiety, and we weren't allowed to talk to them. Then it's been a week now attempting to get his anxiety drugs filled. Multiple phone calls, Multiple promises, finally had to go sit in the waiting room for them to do it and that still took two hours!! And that only got one filled. I have to try again for the other. I'm frustrated. The one in Snellville was far better service and ability to talk to the vet.

Despite my efforts to reach out to this company, I’ve encountered significant difficulty in connecting with anyone via phone. This has led to a less than satisfactory customer experience. I understand that businesses can get busy, but a basic level of customer service, like timely phone response, is essential. I hope the company addresses this issue promptly for better customer engagement in the future.

I am truly thankful for these veterinarians and the front desk staff. My cat Sofi gets very sick at least once per year. She has stomach issues. This has historically incurred enormous hospital fees at other non-Banfield facilities. If you have a cat prone to sickness, or it’s your first year having a cat, or just want your baby to have the best: pay for the total wellness package/health plan for your cat at Banfield. Get the highest package. (Unless your pet is just never sick.) With the premium service, my cat has a ton of services (from teeth cleaning, x-rays, blood work, necessary anesthesia, etc etc) all for free. (Obviously I pay monthly for the service! But GOODNESS does it pay for itself over and over. I come out paying way less per year in Med bills by just paying my membership fee.) They are good to my cat. Dr. Lettsome is no longer a vet there, but Dr. Bailey did a good job. I really can’t stress enough how much I appreciate this location. I always ask a million questions and the front desk is very patient. My cat has been here about 3 times (once for a terrible emergency) and every time we leave relieved. So this is my 5-star review. And I never leave reviews. Thanks. 🐈‍⬛

They do the exams on the pets in front of the other animals in the kennels. It stressed my cat out so much he wouldn’t leave the kennel with out me going back and getting him. The vet care is fine; but the people don’t really seem to care about anyone who comes in, and they don’t care about stressing out your pet by examining other animals in front of them.
