How to Save Money at Rivertown Veterinary Emergency - After Hours Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our brand new puppy started seriously vomiting and couldn’t hold anything down… our local vet here in Columbus was closing and highly recommended Rivertown. From the staff to the doctors, we felt so confident in the care he was receiving. He stayed overnight where he significantly improved, and they communicated everything with our vet, so we were able to pick him up and then take them to our vet as soon as they opened. They also communicated with us so well and helped us to understand what all was going on. While the cost was fairly significant, it was worth every penny to know our sweet boy was well taken care of. While we hope he stays healthy, if we do have another emergency arise after hours, there’s no one else we will trust. ❤️ Thank you, Rivertown!!

My poor girl woke up with a swollen and red eye this morning and they were able to fit us in. They were so nice and friendly throughout the entire visit! I was really nervous to go to a new vet but our regular vet is closed and I didn’t want to wait until Monday for our girl to be seen. I’m so glad I gave them a try! They were quick and efficient and very caring towards our girl! Thank you Rivertown!

I had an emergency situation come up on a recent Saturday morning and took my Golden Doodle to Rivertown Veterinary Emergency. Dr. Kees was in the office and quickly took action when my pup turned for the worse upon arriving. She had a work up done quickly and he had immediate relief from the severe symptoms of Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome. She and her staff kept him for the day and gave him amazing care. Dr. Kees diagnosed him so quickly and knew exactly what caused it. What a wealth of knowledge she possesses. The kindness and caring I experienced was more than I could ask for from the entire team. I can’t thank them all enough for sending home a happy and healthy pup.

Every single staff member here is kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable. The encouraged our many phone calls to check in on our dog, happily updated us when we did call. Dr. Kees explained anything and everything about our dog's condition and treatments. She answered all of our questions with great and understandable detail. They treated our dog as if he were their own. They have very easily earned our gratitude and trust. We can't thank them enough for their incredible treatment of our dog! Would recommend them above all others!

These people are money hungry that don't seem to give a rats behind about the animals. My husband took a dog that had just gotten bit by a copperhead to them for emergency's services because that's what they advertise as also, they then turned an informed him it would be $900 just to see the puppy and oh by the way we're fixing to be closing. Yeah I wouldn't take a dead dog to them, They're rude!! Find somewhere else even in an emergency do not go to these people. When my husband took the dog up there he was in a rush because of it obviously being an emergency being the dog was only a couple months old, they wouldn't even so much as see the dog until they had payment up front of $900 and that was just to see her not even treat her. So needless to say they're on their way to a different vet as we speak, and they didn't seem to care if anything happened or not. I emphasize do not trust these people with your pets...
