How to Save Money at Total Veterinary Care - Buford

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We recently brought our 12 year old “puppy” in for a teeth cleaning and tooth extraction. Needless to say, my wife and I were a bit worried with having an old dog put under for treatment. Dr. Hadaway and staff went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. They did an amazing job and kept us updated on the whole process. Due to a prior bad anesthesia experience at another vet, Dr. Hadaway listened to our concerns and everything went great.

Great practice with great doctors! I have a dog who is my pride and joy. Each time I take her for cleanings and general care, the staff has been fabulous and she’s had excellent treatment. Customer service is everything to me and this practice does not disappoint. Dr. Hadaway has been our vet for almost 3 years and she’s thorough, compassionate and I really do believe she loves and cares for others pets as if they were her own. She’s responsive and always explained things in a way that I was able to understand. If you’re looking for a reliable, trustworthy vet, I would highly recommend this practice!

I have been taking my pets here for over 5 years. I will never bring my pets anywhere else. They are patient and kind, even with one of my pets being super anxious about people and other animals. We love everyone here and appreciate the care and consideration they provide to our family.

This vet is absolutely amazing! My kittens first time at the vet and all of the staff here went above and beyond for not only my wife and I but my sweet Matilda! A very stress free environment and they are so informative and all were very sweet to my Matilda!

Traumatizing to say the least. They were careless in handling my sweet cat and she supposedly bit a tech. The vet called animal control. Animal control was at my house waiting on me practically and gave me a 24 hr notice to quarantine my kitty for 10 days or have the rath of the county come down on me w a $1,000/day fine and have my kitty taken away! She is an indoor cat and all this because I was late getting her a rabies shot. She has never been near any other animals. So if you think your pet may bite and if you are late on rabies go somewhere else. Also this place does not allow pet owners present when they give their services which I will never allow again. I have always been present when my pets were treated except surgery at previous vets!!! I have no idea what they are doing to my pet in my absence. They could have hurt my cat and caused it to bite!!! Owners can help keep their pets calm while they get shots etc! Now my poor kitty will be traumatized in a 10 day quarantine away from home. 5/27 In reply to owner response. My cats are 2 years old and have been spayed and tested and vaccinated including rabies. So do not say my cats were unvaccinated just because they were late on their second rabies shot! Also this is the first time ever you mentioned my cat was “reactive”! If you believed this then why was I not advised to have her sedated before each visit??? More lies and BS from you! You had copies of all their history from the previous vet which was kind and compassionate to take her in for this quarantine. I will never be back and I will never have good things to say about your business.
