How to Save Money at SurgiPet Affordable Surgery & Dentistry

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I called SurgiPet this morning and explained the urgency in our one year old lab. She had a small ball in her intestine and needed immediate surgery. Brittney called back in two minutes and told us to come right in. Its 2:00 and Kate is out of surgery and will recover well! The cost at the ER Vet was 5300.00. SurgiPet was 1300.00 their care was outstanding. I don’t know how they do it but I will forever make donations to this non profit Veterinary Clinic for saving Kate! Thank you Thank you Thank you!

Surgipet literally saved my cat's life. When he ate a straw and became blocked, the ER vet wanted over $6K to do the surgery, and with a family I just simply could not afford that. I took him home, hoping he could make it through the night, and called Surgipet first thing the next morning. They were so kind and understanding and told me to bring him in immediately (we are about 2 hours away). They had him in surgery a few hours later and sent him home with me, with appropriate pain meds! The incision looked great and healed perfectly. All said and done, we paid about 1800 at Surgipet. Dr. Kurt was so fabulous and caring and I felt completely comfortable leaving my kitty in his care. The staff was incredibly kind and empathetic. We were never made to feel "less than" for not being able to afford this surgery elsewhere. Kind, respectful, and talented crew. I was a vet tech for a decade, and I know how hard this job is. They do it better than most. We are now 2 weeks out from surgery and CityKitty is back to his normal, mischievous self. I have told everyone I know about Surgipet, and will continue to do so, and will absolutely be scheduling dentals with them in the future. Thank you all!!

Our cat Bespin needed a PU surgery and a bladder stone removal, and we were not in a position to afford it. Surgipet stepped in and saved his life. They gave us a rate we could afford with care that went above and beyond what we ever expected. Now he is happy and healthy and will continue to live a long life. Throughout the ordeal the staff has been nothing but courteous and professional. Thank you Surgipet!

I cannot even express how grateful I am for SurgiPet and the team that works there. My baby Arizona needed surgery ASAP and even though they were booked for the day, Brittany took my information and called me back to let me know they could work her in. We got in as soon as we could and everyone was so nice and helpful in explaining everything so thoroughly. They gave us a breakdown of every step that was going to happen and how much it would cost. We left Arizona in their care and Doctor Feroli called me a couple of hours later to tell me the surgery went great and when we could pick her up. This is the first time I've ever had to do something like this and everyone there was so helpful and comforting. Thank you for easing my worries & making this an easy process! Arizona is now resting at home but is already feeling so much better than she did.

I was distraught when a stray cat I’ve been feeding for 10 years showed up one day with a broken leg. So thankful my vet referred me to SurgiPet. I was a wreck trying to decide what to do for this poor kitty, and the front desk receptionist (Brittany I believe) took the time to listen to my concerns, explain the options (amputation or surgery), risks and costs (surprisingly inexpensive compared to other animal hospitals). You could tell she was having a busy day, but her taking the time to offer support and options meant the world to me. Ultimately I decided to amputate the severely fractured leg, and was given clear instructions for pre-surgery prep. The kindness of SurgiPet didn’t stop at reception - On the day of my cat’s surgery, I got to meet and consult with several vet techs and Dr. Kurt - Who just blew me away with how much he cared and listened. What a wonderful veterinary surgeon - He was so compassionate it had me wishing he was a “people doctor” too! I was sent home with a wonderful packet of post-op instructions and medications, and Dr. Kurt even called the following morning himself to check on my kitty. I will be returning to SurgiPet with my dog and other kitties if ever needed. This place is such a rare and wonderful example of kindness and compassion and human connection still existing - We need more Dr. Kurts and SurgiPet staff in the world.
