How to Save Money at Shepherd Animal hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Shepherd Animal Hospital took very good care of my Coco during and after a delicate surgery. They even called to check on her the following day. The love shown for my fur baby was incomparable.

We brought our cat Hotdog in after an incident of flea medicine toxicity, and the vets and staff were all so helpful and kind. It was obvious how much these people care about the animals in their care, and they helped get my sweet baby back to her normal crazy self. Victoria especially was a huge comfort when we were agonizing over the health of the baby. Thanks everyone at Shepherd -- y'all are really amazing. Hotdog picture for the cat tax

Coming to Shepherd ended being the best thing that could've happened to my pup (Chiquis). They immediately started him on lifelong treatment for heart failure, which no doubt prolonged his life & significantly improved his quality of life (our previous vet never suggested treatment even though he was coughing- they even gave us cough suppressant once!). I've been here countless times and have put 2 dogs down here at the end of life. The staff here are all so caring, compassionate, and transparent with their recommendations. They even sent a card for my last dog 🩷 Their hours are a major plus & pricing is fair. Highly recommend!

I would like to thank the doctor and your team for fixing dog’s cherry eye. She is happy and she is much less irritated weeks after the surgery. I would like to share my experience with your team. We went in for a standard in person/dog pre visit doctors visit before setting up a day and time for the surgery. In the exam room when speaking to your nurse, I told the nurse we do not want any shots including Rabies (this is mandatory, we wouldn’t get it if we didn’t need it for international travel). Doctor came in the exam room and I told the Doctor I do not want any shots for my dog other than Rabies, no Distemper/Parvo Vaccine and Bordetella. Getting my Estimate from Shepherd I didn’t think too much seeing Distemper/Parvo Vaccine and Bordetella I was thinking it’s an auto generate for all pets. We booked an appointment and went in the morning of the surgery; we were not contacted by nurse the day before to inform us that our dogs were not allowed to eat the morning of. Flustered when I heard that they had to asked doctor if they can still do the surgery or not. Nurse came back and said yes doctor is willing to work on our dogs with only a ¼ cup of brown rice and steak. Nurse printed a letter for me to sign for this surgery to proceed but they only provide the back of the contact, blank page with my signature required at the top of the blank page. Surgery was completed and home the dogs went and days later I read the receipt of what was done, I didn’t know they both got their Distemper/Parvo Vaccine and Bordetella. I called the Shepherd and they told me both my dogs got these vaccines. Where did the miscommunication happen here? I spoke the doctor and the doctor was not helpful (customer service non-compliant) pretty much said this is my shop I call the shots. I say you are required to have Distemper/Parvo Vaccine and Bordetella to drop the dogs off from 8 AM – 4PM because they are boarding. I said if you are so adamant of being like that and not listening to your paying customer, I don’t want to deal with you as Animal Hospital. Failure points of this interaction, I will take responsibility for not looking over the contact, before signing when dropping the dogs off. I do blame partly to the nurse that ask me to sign off on it for not flipping over so I could have read the contact before signing. Nurse and Doctor on the exam visit did not listen to their paying customer of their needs and wants, if you listened to your customer, I wouldn’t be documenting this for you. I will say they did refund the cost for the Distemper/Parvo Vaccine and Bordetella for both dogs but this medical procedure that is not reversable.

We had a very nice experience bringing our lab to Shepherd Animal Hospital. We were visiting from out of town and our dog was vomiting and we decided around noon on a Saturday we didn't want to wait until Monday to get her into a vet. After calling more than 10 places, Shepherd was the only one that had a doctor on staff and availability to see her same day. We couldn't have been happier with the facility, service and care. They ran a full geriatric health screen panel and we got the results within an hour and were relieved nothing major was wrong. We left with anti-nausea medication and probiotics and our dog was back to her normal self in a couple of days. Very clean facility, knowledgeable and caring staff. Highly recommended.
