How to Save Money at VCA Midtown Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Mary Hill and the staff here are great! Each time I’ve come here, my dog and I have been treated with respect and compassion and I’m kept informed of what’s going on. This was our first time seeing Dr. Hill, and she and her assistant made my senior (10 year old) dog feel more comfortable than I’ve seen him with other vets. She made sure to get down onto his level and made sure he felt safe and secure. I understand veterinary expenses can be steep, but I feel everything is fairly priced. Also, the front desk was very friendly and welcoming.

This hospital has saved my dog Oliver’s life numerous times. In 2022 my 13 year old was admitted with pancreatitis and they nursed him to health. More recently he had swallowed a child’s toy and they performed surgery to remove the toy and repair his intestine. The care every single person at that hospital gave was truly incredible! Their techs & front office staff are wonderful people! Dr. Davis & Dr. Seidman in particular worked so closely with our family throughout the rollercoaster of our 2+ week stay. They put up with me too as the overbearing dog mom, which I greatly appreciated! I HIGHLY recommend this hospital to take care of your fur babies!!

I have a 1 and a half year old Ratchi (Rat Terrier & Chihuahua mixed) he’s been suffering from consistent seizures. I brought him in on Friday the 24th for a 5:00PM exam. I do understand that of course I will not be seen once I walk in however I sat for about 45 mins and watched people who entered after me with later appt times be seen sooner. When speaking with the staff over the phone, they made me feel that there was a sense of urgency due to my dog’s condition but when I arrived that’s not how we were treated. We finally saw the vet for about 10 mins which cost $105 for the “exam” and then I agreed to get a $205 blood test however what the vet tech explained to me VS what happen was completely different. I was told that the results would give me answers regarding my dog’s seizures or next steps. Sadly that was not the case. On Monday the 27th I received a text message from Dr. Benfield who saw me and my dog for 10 mins for $105 and just like the visit the follow up text was short and told me nothing. She did not explain to me what was the cause of the seizure, or any next steps for treatment. She only told me about an elevated blood count which had nothing to do with why i originally wanted my dog to be tested. She also ended the text basically telling me to reach out if there are any more concerns. My initial concerns haven’t even been addressed and what happened to the results regarding the seizures and if there isn’t any what happened to the next steps. To spend that much money and to get a text message that has nothing to do with the visit is a slap in the face. If someone is spending that much money of course a phone call is necessary, i have several questions. The Dr basically told me to reach out to her if I have any more concerns when my initial concern that I paid for, has not been addressed and i was not given any updates for next steps to help my dog. We are literally in the same place we were in before coming into the appointment. My dog is still having seizures and I still don’t know what to do about it or how it help him and of course the vet is now on vacation. Thanks VCA. Also thanks to Mary Ann the office manager who I spoke with who had no resolution for me at all. No sympathy for my dogs situations or any advice. Customer Service is terrible! I do not recommend this place. This place caters more to there white customers, as a black person I did not feel welcomed.

I’ve never experienced this level of compassion. The way the staff was so considerate of me and how emotional I was about my dog being in pain was something I could never repay, they went above and beyond to comfort us both. I wish I remembered the vet and assistants names who helped me, but overall highly recommend and will forever be grateful for my experience at VCA midtown and their quality of care.

I've been here more times than I can count since adopting my kitty 2 years ago. Eye+Ear Infections, Breathing+Skin Issues. I've seen 5 vets. The care and follow up good, (sometim es you might need to call them, but that's true with other vets, too). Responsive to email. A few excellent front desk people (and a few newbies in training who don't always last-staffing issues like any business). I've seen a front desk person rush out to the parking lot and personally carry a huge dog in crisis to the emergency room. If you are willing to see different vets, they can usually get you in within a few days, and if you cannot wait, you can come in without an appointment but the fee is about $50 more. Other vets I've used generally don't have openings for 1.5 weeks +. Open until 10pm (!) and Sat/Sun. This is rare and appreciated, esp. for those of us whose pets always seem to get ill on the weekend. They are absolutely the most flexible option out there! Con would be that they are pricier than other vets I've seen (but given the flexibility and availability, worth it). They have a Pet Plan for $90 a month that includes free check-up/booked visits (not emergency) and yearly physical. Again, not for everyone, but great for pets with chronic issues. They will give you detailed pricing before any procedures. You can accept or not, seek a second opinion, go home and decide. It's not unusual for vets to recommend diagnostics for our pets who can't tell us what's going on exactly. I understand that medical care for a pet is just as frustrating and confusing as it is for humans, but I think VCA does a great job, especially if your pet needs frequent care. They are also always nice about my terrified-of-the-vet kitty, who is not at all nice to them. Also note, they may call you at 8pm, because their end of the day is not 5pm. I go to another vet who is a cat specialist, but it's really hard to see her in less than 2-3 weeks, so VCA is usually my go to, and I'm happy with them. I think some of these low reviews represent outliers (or frustration) rather than the standard care they provide.
