How to Save Money at BuckHaven Veterinary Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My love for Buckhaven Vet began when Foxy, my Italian Greyhound had an abscessed anal gland (TMI). We had been going to WellPet humane, and they refused service as they were too busy for a long time patient. I requested our records, and as I was driving by Buckhaven, I gave them call. Samantha answered the phone and said that while they were full for the day, they would do their best and to come on in. She put us in a room and gave me a warm blanket for Foxy. Dr. Mark popped in, told me it would be a little bit and he would take care of her, offered me a beer because clearly, I was stressed and covered in the most disgusting fluid ever. They took great care of my girl, and our family has been loyal clients of the practice ever since. Fast forward today and our IG “Chino” has liver disease. He desperately needed a teeth cleaning and the anesthesia I consented to, sent the disease into regression and it was SCARY! Dr. Holzwarth suggested trying a medicine for his liver and I had a new dog in less than 24 hours. My 10yr old boy has a new lease on life and I am forever grateful(he’s my favorite, shhhh) Dr. Schaefer has overseen the allergy care for Foxy, backaches for Ace (4 yr old rambunctious IG) and help with Chino as well. You will not find a better vet clinic around town that will do everything they can for you fur kids! It’s a wonderful family over there and if you aren’t a part of it, you are missing out!

Great vet clinic. The front desk staff are very friendly and professional, and the doctors are great. They always take the time to explain my cat’s health and have a meaningful discussion with me about his treatment. I’ve never had a problem getting an appointment quickly, and they have good hours. I highly recommend this clinic for anyone in the area.

WARNING- READ PLEASE- DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME GOING TO SEE DR. MARK! He lacks ALL bedside manner and has 0 sympathy for what you are experiencing with your pet/dog. If you care about your animal at all (it is clear that Dr. Mark does not), please take your animal/child somewhere else for optimal vet care. He did not follow surgical procedures that were provided to him and takes no accountability for his mistakes. He then proceeds to blame me for being emotional and not clearly "hearing" him. All practitioners involved also failed to inform me that an epileptic dog might be prone to seizures while exposed to anesthesia. Not a pleasant surprise and something we should have been warned of. The practice themselves were very quick to check-in my dog for surgery without providing me any insight into expectations or answering questions for surgery. Even post-surgery instruction lack detail of medication and care to provide. I had to initiate a conversation before handing over my dog. Dr, Mark takes NO accountability for his actions, as well as, remains defensive in his standings. To top it all off, my dogs incision from surgery is now infected and you can bet that we are now seeking optimal care for our dog at another vet clinic. It shocks me that he has been in practice for as long as he has. He needs to retire. He has great staff that work for him and it is such a shame that he is ruining his own practice for all involved. If you live in the Brookhaven area or anywhere close, please go see ANY OTHER VET. Spare yourself from this rude, arrogant, immature and unprofessional gentleman who likes to call him self a veterinarian.

I recently took my cat to Buckhaven vet because she was experiencing a limp. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the vet was able to examine her without causing her any undue stress. My cat didn't freak out at all during the appointment, which was a huge relief. The vet was also very straightforward with me about everything, which I appreciated. I got the sense that he truly cared about my pet's well-being, and was determined to make both my pet and myself as comfortable as possible throughout the process. All in all, I was very impressed with the care and service we received at Buckhaven vet.

Been taking my pup here all her life. The administrators and Vets are the best. They remember your puppy's name, they are extremely invested in your pups health, they call and make up followups to check on your pup. I love this Clinic and highly recommend it. The staff here is just so amazing and accommodating.
