How to Save Money at West Orange Veterinary Hospital at Hamlin
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Such a refreshing experience! I have an overly energetic one year old Miniature Golden Doodle. At my previous vet that I went to in the area for the past year, there was not a time that I left after a visit without crying because of how my vet and the techs made me feel. Here at WOVH, the vet got down on her knees to greet and check out my dog, waited for correct behavior before interacting with him, and used positive reinforcement with preferred treats. The entire staff made me feel like my dog was welcome and understood that he is still learning correct behaviors out in the community. Exceptional vet care and customer services. The vet always explains all my options and everything in laymen’s terms for what my dog may need next. Extremely happy with my switch! We love Dr Markwardt! Thank you!

The only issue I’ve ever had, is due to scheduling conflicts I had to change my appointment, come to find out I needed a later time, so I called back to change it again 30 minutes later, the receptionist said we close at 1 for lunch, I said oh, ok we can schedule it after lunch, she abruptly replied “nope, it’s changed to 12:30 bye! That was it. Other than that the office has always been pleasant and very caring, I have Husky who van be very stubborn, all have been patient with her. My girl is the only pet I know of that is now super excited to go to vet!

What a terrible place! This is a joke of an office. I brought my dog in who had a swollen throat, and could not breathe. The receptionist looked at me like I had a third eye, while my dog was literally choking and breathing loudly and clearly struggling. All of the other clients around could tell it was an emergency, and she took the time to get up from her chair. Go to the back and tell me that the vet was busy in an appointment. She also kept telling us to wait outside. Thinking the dog had kennel cough when I was telling her he has a lump on his throat and a swollen face. We asked if that appointment the vet was in was an emergency and she said no. Then, she goes back inside and tell us to go around to the back where a tech will meet us to examine the dog. We went out to the back. No one was there. We waited five minutes with our dog, struggling to breathe, and no one came out. I don’t know what kind of vet this is but this was very neglectful and Sad. I do not recommend this place at all. We are now at a legitimate vet clinic, and my dog had an emergency, and they took care of him right away with injections in emergency care! Do not go here! They don’t care!

UPDATE: The owner of the practice reached out and addressed my concerns and let me know that my experience with the tech was not an isolated incident and that the situation has been corrected. So kudos for WOVH for reaching out. I’m a big believer in it’s more important how you handle things when things go sideways so I’m changing my stars to 5. We’ve brought our dog Loki here since we moved to the area. Care has been ok but today as I sit in the room waiting for the vet I’ve made the decision not to ever come back. Vet tech was rude and standoffish. I felt from the second she walked into the room I was bothering her. Hey if you don’t like your job, find another one! Would not engage my dog at all. Even tried to hand me the cue tips to swab my dogs ears because he was jumping around.

West Orange Veterinary Hospital gets five stars for their compassionate care, clean, modern offices, ease of making appointments, reminders and because they take the time to explain all of the options. Pricing is fair. They care for my two young cats and when my 14 year old sweet kitty reaching the end of her days, they were very gentle with her and kind to our family. Great staff.
