How to Save Money at Veterinary Medical Center of Indian River County
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

On 8/15/23 we brought our cat to the afterhours emergency vet as HE was not acting himself and not eating. The vet came in and referred to our male cat as they/them. We were so concerned about our cat that I was confused who the vet was referring to and kept looking out the door anticipating they or them coming into the examining room. It then hit us that he was using pronouns for our cat. I was upset about our cat being sick, now we are using pronouns on animals, really? There is a time and place for that but not in the veterinary world. Even in his discharge paperwork the vet wrote "they". Our cat was running a high fever, blood work was done, we were never told the results. The vet came in suggesting that he stay 3/4 night and have testing done at an estimate of $2500+. We opted to take him to our vet that is familiar with him in the morning. The vet seemed very inexperienced going back and forth on a shot of antibiotics or pill form. The vet finally settled on a shot of antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids under the skin. Our cat was taken back for this to be done and within minutes returned to us, it did not seem he got the subcutaneous fluids under the skin as there was no bubble of fluid on his back. Upon check out, the bill, we feel, was high ($597.10) for the level of care that was received, the discharge papers, would be emailed to us and our vet. The next morning, we had to call and ask them to please email the paperwork. On the discharge paperwork some of our cat's blood levels were elevated, we were never told that. Upon further review of this vet, we found that he had only been licensed for 40 days. I did call the clinic and share my concerns and that I felt it was overpriced for what we received. After getting a call back from the office manager she never did address the pronoun issue, stated she could not go that far back on the cameras to see if the fluids were given but stated rest assure, he received them and stated a seasoned vet was there assisting the new vet. I was offered $50 off our next visit which is futile as there will not ever be a next visit to this facility.

EXTREMELY happy with the care I received, I came in with my cat who was having urinary issues. The nurse and vet were very good at explaining everything and the tests they could/would run. They explained some options and they were very sweet to my cat and patient considering she was NOT happy to be there. Although a little slow, it’s expected. They’re an emergency vet so please be patient with them! Everything was reasonably priced, i’m very happy to say the least! Everything was calm, quiet and very clean, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who needs an emergency vet.

Every staff from the front desk, to the vet tech, to the Veterinarian we’re OUTSTANDING! Well worth the hour drive! The prices shocked me in the best way possible! I have never been to a Vet with the level of service and genuine care that this facility has. I am so blessed with how well they took care of my Dog. I am switching all 4 of my animals to this Vet! If you have any questions, they’re going to help you out! If you have any concern about your animal, they have their best interest at heart. I’ve never been to a Vet as thorough and out right amazing as they were! If you’re curious about anything or questioning which vet to use, go here! I was utterly shocked with their amazing care truthfully!

This place is amazing. We brought our best friend/family member (Astro) in because he was acting strange and couldn’t keep his balance. They immediately started treating him and testing for everything. All of the nurses and doctors were compassionate and made us feel as ease knowing our pup was in the right spot. They gave an estimate and took a deposit (for the low side of the estimate) and kept him overnight and continued the tests (blood tests, ultrasound, scans, etc). During the night and early morning, the night doc kept us updated. She was great. The next day the results came in indicating cancer that had spread all over. We had to make the horrible decision that nobody wants to make. Everything was explained well to our entire family. They handled it with the upmost dignity and respect for both our dog and our family members. Once everything was done I asked what else do we owe and they said “Nothing, actually I need the card to process a refund.” They refunded us $700 of the original deposit, as they stopped further tests and treatment once they found the problem. This showed us that this place is completely HONEST and FAIR. They could have easily said they did stuff and we wouldn’t have known the difference. We will forever be grateful to the entire team and thank them all for treating our dog, and us - with such wonderful care. ♥️♥️

Dr. Geraghty and his entire staff are outstanding. I had three very sick TNR cats in ER. They nursed them back to health again. We’re so grateful because our outdoor kitties are just as loved as our indoor kitties.
