How to Save Money at The Animal Hospital & Pet Resort at Southwood
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
The Animal Hospital at Southwood is the absolute best. The most amazing and compassionate staff (receptionists, vet techs, and veterinarians). My 2 dogs see Dr. Smith and my cat sees Dr. Brown and I am always so happy to talk to them at our appointments because they are so sweet and informative. You can tell they truly care about your babies. But, the awesomeness of this place doesn’t stop with the veterinarian services- they have an amazing pet resort too! I’m always comforted leaving my babies here because I know they will be taken care. We get pictures of them during play time and they come home all smiles with a little report card! Unfortunately, my family is moving to Texas and the saddest part about our move is that we won’t be a part of the Southwood family anymore and will have to find a new clinic, which will be hard as Southwood has set the standard very high! If you’re looking for a new vet, please stop right now and call Southwood! You will not be disappointed by these amazing people.

Wonderful care when you can afford to be seen. Both of our babies have been patients there since babies. Yearly visits, vaccinations and spayed and neutered. Our Golden loves dirt, water, and rolling in grass- which at times causes ear infections. He has had them in the past and was seen, given antibiotic and advised us to clean ears weekly. I called today because he is again shaking his head frequently the past two days and been outside more. I explained due to financial hardship caused by medical treatments for me, I did not have the $75 office visit, plus cost for test and medication and asked his vet to please just prescribe an antibiotic for his ear infection so that he doesn’t have to suffer. She just nonchalantly said no visit no meds. Thank you so much for caring about our fur babies. Understand totally about not prescribing without seeing them— but what about billing a patient who has been loyal for 4 years and never asked to be billed or having the baby see the tech instead of a full office visit which costs almost 100$ whereas tech visit only charges for service rendered? Tech takes the sample anyway. You are just making excuses as to why you couldn’t just issue an antibiotic — what about offering other ways to help??? If as you indicate that you truly care— something else could have been done. We will not be back! And, I now have 2 other friends who will not go back— because of your “ not our problem” attitude on the phone.

The Pet Resort at Southwood is the only place we feel comfortable leaving our fur babies. Kim is so patient with our highly reactive girls. It doesn't take them long to remember how much they love her! We are lucky to have a place in town that gives us some piece of mind when they cannot travel with us. We are so grateful for the updates and pics during their stay.

Such a great place for your dogs. Every time we take our dogs here they are excited to go. They also include a bath, dog cologne, and nail trim if you stay over a certain amount of days. This was our dogs' 3rd time staying and it was for 10 days. They send you the best pictures of the dogs too! For added convenience the doctor saw them for their annual check up during their stay!

I have always had pets and have done extensive rescue volunteering. In all these years, I've never had a bad vet per se but none could compare to The Animal Hospital and Pet Resort! The vets are top notch, the staff is wonderful, and they always make me feel that my Ellie is so important. Recently boarded Ellie in the resort and she loved it! It was nice to take a quick vacation and not worry about Ellie's care. They even sent photos! I've added my very favorite here. My corgi, Gruffydd lives them too!
