How to Save Money at Capital Veterinary Specialists
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had a sick little fellow on a Sunday. I was worried and nervous about how to get care on a weekend. A friend suggested Capital Veterinary Specialists. I was happy to find a place that was open. We were welcomed with open arms. The staff and Dr. were kind and thoughtful. They treated my Lil’ Shady dog like they knew him and cared about him. I was never left waiting or wondering what was happening. The vet took time to explain to me what was wrong and gave options as to how to help him. She did not pressure me to spend money we didn’t have. She provided a solution and made a plan on next steps if needed. The place is beautiful and I was afraid it would be very expensive but the price was in line with my regular vet. I loved the people and the place and the best part is that Lil’ Shady is all better!

I have taken Teddy here for years. Dr Drygas is the best and the staff is so nice and helpful. They know Teddy by name and treat him like he's the most special dog in the world! I always recommend Capital Veterinary Specialists to my friends, family and coworkers. I just can't say enough about how much I appreciate them!

Very professional, helpful and kind. Walked me through making good decisions about my dog's future health. Honest and upfront about costs, I actually got a refund from my deposit as surgery came in less than anticipated.

Our Buddy was suffering from a herniated liver and needed surgery. We were referred from out home vet and trust her opinion. They kept him over the weekend for monitoring and we were told the cost would be between 3500-4500 but the paper showed 3500-5000$ and some change. I asked about the difference and was told well you either sign it or he doesn’t get surgery by I think one of the techs. Doctor said seems he’s doing well so it should be on the lower end and he will try to keep it as low as possible. An obviously very high price for surgery for a pet but he is a family member so we had to get it done. The 5000 was a High estimate if complications or extreme cases I was in the understanding. Well we got billed for even higher than the high estimate and was told they could go down to the $5000 but no less. Was told the surgery went well with no complications in my mind and a reasonable person would assume that means the lower estimate is most likely the one that will be honored. Well that was not the case. I’m hoping our buddy has a good recovery because I do not plan to be back. I have not been pleased with the customer service either I was told I should have expected at least $5000 bill. With no sympathy for the bill for a service in which they set the price. It was in my opinion and the board will hear and have an opinion as well if I don’t hear from them to hopefully mend this hopefully clerical error in billing. The veterinarian himself was very polite and I really appreciated the calls to give me updates. I feel this is a facility problem since I don’t feel he is over the billing I could be wrong. The photo is the day before he went into surgery and he was playful and happy and seemed like he wanted to just go home and play. Well I knew he had to get the surgery for quality of life and I wanted to make sure he was healthy and well so he stayed but from the sights of it the surgery should go very well from how he was acting and I do know that’s not always the case. Thankfully his did go well. I overall was just disappointed with the estimate and statement at the end being so much higher than the low estimate due to how well buddy did in their words. In any line of business you should estimate high and come in low so the client is happy. They are not good at that line of business and it seems unfair in the scope of services rendered since he did do so well. REPLY TO OWNER- not sure how to respond on here other than to edit. I have attached a copy of quote that does have initial exam on it and the quote includes Miscellaneous items which should cover all needed for him. A quote is to give a price for full services rendered not just partly. Also 6 nights was quoted as well for boarding for they knew the whole situation when getting a quote for us. So nothing changed from the date we dropped bud off. I’m glad he’s okay but I felt taken advantage of in this particular situation. Financially it’s a big payout and for false hope that it would be on the lower end since buddy was so good and very stable when coming in other than the surgery needing to be performed to correct his breathing is disappointing to say the least.

The talented doctors and nurses at CVS saved my little Sheba. We went through their Urgent Care service after almost three weeks of vomiting. We were able to get blood work and X-rays the same day. Nothing significant, the next step was an ultrasound. The internal medicine team lead by Dr. Morales preformed the ultrasound and found a giant hairball stuck her stomach and some very upset intestines. They hospitalized her overnight and she was able to get exploratory surgery the next day by Dr. Jehn and his team to remove the hairball and take biopsies. I was able to communicate with the overnight nurses and check on Sheba, they even sent me a picture. I was able to bring her home the next day. They were also quick to respond on the weekend when her incision started to look a little red and angry. 48hrs of hot and cold treatments and her incision was back to normal. It was a whirlwind of a week but I am so happy that a place like Capital Veterinary Specialists exists. So many talented individuals had to come together to save my Sheba and I am very grateful I got to bring her home. Thank you Capital Veterinary Specialist!
