How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Can I put 5000 Stars? For anybody who considers their pet a child, this is your place. We recently had to put down our dog and our Vet, took time out of her weekend to come help us because of the rapport we've built over the years, she even checked in with my wife the next day to see how she was doing. A+++++ HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The staff is like family. When our dog Sula was a patient at another facility, the. Doctors and staff kept in communication with us regarding Sula's condition. We appreciate and thank them very much.

Specific review for Dr. Ivan. Had a couple mediocre experiences with Banfield locations in the past, unnecessary test orders, general lack of apparent care for my pet. Had a friend recommend their wonderful experiences with Dr. Ivan and I can't help but say the same. In my experience this location on MLK has been a better one than the more convenient locations. The staff has been professional and kind. Dr Ivan has been particularly great. So empathetic, honest and open. The high water mark for any one you entrust your pet to is that they treat them the way you would. Dr Ivan and the staff here including Kris who most recently worked with my cat do that and it makes me comfortable leaving my best friend with these folks.

If I could give them infinite stars, I would. We've been partnering with Dr. Waechter and the team at Banfield St. Pete in our pets' care for over a decade now, and to say they are incredible is an understatement on all accounts. They are compassionate (with our fur babies AND with us), helpful, honest about what's best for our pet (even when it's the hard thing), transparent and sensitive about cost, and their #1 priority is always, always, always the quality of life of our pets. We had a tough go of it in the second half of 2023 when our sweet boy, Shaq, was diagnosed with IMHA, a horrible disease that attacks red blood cells in the body. The prognosis is horrendous for this disease and most dogs do not survive the first few days after diagnosis. Dr. Waechter worked with Shaq for 6 months after his initial diagnosis, kept me educated on how things were going for him, and took the absolute best care of him until he succumbed to his illness in November. It was a Saturday and she LEFT A BIRTHDAY PARTY to come escort our baby across the Rainbow Bridge and to be there to support me through it. What vet do you know that would do that?! The team - Dr. Waechter, Chelsea, Jackie, Dr. Ivan, Phoenix, (and more that I know I'm forgetting to include) - are more than just a vets office...to us, they are family, and we will forever be so grateful for their years of partnership in raising our babies with the absolute best of care.

Duck has been coming to this Banfield location her entire life! She loves the employees and they have been very helpful every time we have come. We have the Banfield Puppy Plan which I highly recommend if you are adopting a puppy, it covers basic vaccines and office visit fees and you can add on heartworm, flea, and tick prevention as well. The office employees and vets are very kind and we really appreciate them! Our most recent visit we were assisted Jackie and Kris, but everyone at this location deserves a shoutout for being so great. We loved the cute stickers on our bag on the way out as well. Try this Banfield location!
