How to Save Money at Hiawassee Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I love Dr. Palm and the whole staff. He's very knowledgeable and cares deeply about every pet that comes in. My cat is a spicy little thing who was especially grumpy from being in pain from bladder stones, and he took care of her like she was his own. One of the things that's really important to me is that I'm in the exam room with her all the time. It makes me and her much more comfortable, so she's easier to treat. She's so comfortable there she'll bathe herself! We've been seeing Dr. Palm for 4 years and I won't take my cats anywhere else!

Dr Palm is truly the best vet, and his office & tech staff are superb. Throughout Belle's struggles, they were so sweet and loyal to her well-being. All the way up to her last second with us, she was taken care of and loved with dignity. 🐾

We’ve been going to this practice for several years and I’ve spoken highly of this practice, recommending the business on social media. Wednesday I took my dog in for wellness visit and she had a vaccine shot. I asked during the appointment about the side effects and they said these are normal vaccines. No more info on side effects or what to look out for. Wednesday evening she was not doing well and lethargic. She did not want to move around and same for Thursday morning. I was so worried and we took her back in Thursday to which Dr Palm said it was probably a pinched nerve. She had a low fever and was in pain. The entire time they were pushing that it was not the vaccineor their fault in any way. Mind you, I didn’t ask or say anything. At that point, I didn’t care, I just wanted my girl to feel better as I was so worried. She was given medication and she is doing better. However, I had to pay $215 plus $162 for both visits. Super disappointed as it’s clearly something from the vaccine or the way it was administered . My girl has no health issues and the vet commented many times on how healthy she is. We’ve never had anything like this happen after a vaccine shot. We will have to reevaluate if bringing her to this office is in her best interest.

I left a review about a year ago but wanted to leave another because I had another amazing experience today. After my dog suddenly fell ill they were able to get me in within the hour. Dr. Palm was amazing and was so good with my baby. He was honest and strait to point and explained things very throughly. He determined that the likely cause was toxic chemical from a recently treated lawn that my dog may have ingested. He told me about how wonderful my dog was and he even gave me his number since he was going to be out of the office. To check in and ensure all is ok. With squeezing me in last minute as well as all the test they ran (and waiting for results) i was in and out in less than an hour and a half. The ladies at the front desk are always so nice and pleasant and I love how they run the business. You stay in your car until you are ready to be put in a room. It’s very organized and not chaotic with animals running all over. I’m so glad I found this vet a year ago!

I wanted to bring awareness to this outstanding veterinarian, tech and front office staff. My two mixed breed pups have been seeing Dr. Palm for years but i have a 14 year old with special needs. My 14 year old chihuahua mix - 17 pounds - has a rare disease - Addisons and Dr. Palm diagnosed him and saved his life. My dog requires monthly injections to withstand stress as his body does not produce the hormone needed. Bottom line is i regularly bring my animals in and the staff just treats them so well and accommodates our needs. If you want a trusted and caring vet, highly recommend this family friendly clinic.
