How to Save Money at Okeechobee Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My fiance and I were new to the area and our dog ate a poisonous frog. Dr Harvey and his team were more than AMAZING! They took care of our girl and made us feel so comfortable! And it was affordable!

Good doctors. On one visit, they let me bring my 3 sick cats in and gave me a group discount. The doctor listened to me and was very attentive and kind. I got the medicine that my babies needed. Another visit for my cat who was diagnosed with Stomatitus, I got the surgery done quickly and for an affordable price.

My husband and I are new to the area and had not had a chance to look for a vet for our dogs yet. When 1 of our dogs got sick Okeechobee Veterinary Hospital was very nice on the phone and made an appointment right away to see our dog. When we got there the building was very nice and clean. Everyone there was so nice and friendly. I liked that the vet was not trying to push a lot of test and medicine that our dog did not need. The doctor was wonderful. Thank you so much for taking care of our baby when he was sick. We will definitely be back for all of our veterinary need.

I've taken my furbabies to Okeechobee Veteinary Hospital for many years. I now have two new furbabies and wouldn't take them anywhere else. Just love Dr. Davis and staff.

We have used our primary vet clinic in NY for many years for all of the dogs who come through our 501c3 rescue. We also use Cornell University and Cummings Small Animal Clinic at Tufts University for our more serious concerns. We didn't know what to expect when relocating to FL and starting over with a new veterinary hospital especially since we are "frequent flyers" at the vets and usually see more problems than the average pet owner. In a short period of time, we have had a dog treated for hyperthyroid, one diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a very difficult to handle, large Eastern European Street Dog Rescue boy who needed his ingrown nails trimmed and most recently our little senior guy was diagnosed with kidney failure. Every one of these recent visits to the Okeechobee Veterinary Hospital has been an incredibly positive and reassuring experience - right from talking with the front desk people to the expert care & handling from the techs - especially Paul with our hard to handle boy who he quickly turned into a fast, easy, non-traumatic experience for him through his fast & expert handling (BTW, we'll see you Tuesday again........Lol). Dr. Tia has been amazing with the way she handled & diagnosed, gave suggestions and treatment options for our dog with cancer. We were also able to meet Dr. Davis this week when our little old guy had to come in - she was also wonderful and this reinforced the fact that we can come in at any time, see any Dr. and feel confident and comfortable. We are very fortunate to have such an excellent quality veterinary hospital full of caring and top notch medical professionals available to us. Their prices are incredibly reasonable and the facility is spotless. I would feel 100% confident recommending them. Although......after they get to meet my giant, trouble-making Cashmere Goats, they may feel differently about me! Lol
