How to Save Money at Humane Society Of Greater Miami North

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our Maltipoo was spayed on April 9th of this year and we were very happy with how she was treated. This clinic is top notch. From beginning to end, the entire staff was courteous and very professional. I highly recommend this clinic for all of your furry family member needs.

They are a no-kill shelter per posted signage. The clinic there offers cremation services for pets, as well as the usual vet care. Staff was courteous & compassionate. They were able to take us in without an appointment, as our beloved friend passed, but appointments are encouraged. It was very clean & did not smell overtly like animals. The waiting area is large enough to accommodate many + pets without being cramped. Return time of our kitty's cremains came back in ⅓ of the time estimated. Their prices were much more affordable than everywhere else. They sell toys, collars, dog utility vests, and other animal related items as well as human T-shirts. Parking may be a tiny bit difficult during peak hours for adoptions.

The place was impeccable. The employees were friendly, energetic, professional, courteous and they were in constant movement. Dogs were getting walked out constantly. I had never been to a shelter before so it was just sad to see dogs that have been there for years. Makes you wish you had the money and the space to take them all. You can see the animals through the glass and their info is posted on the window. You do need to make an appointment if you are ready to adopt. We came in with no appointment so once we were done walking around they told us we needed to go online to start the process of adoption. The process includes you coming in and interacting with the dog/cat prior to adoption. There is parking on premises.

I have been visiting this clinic and shelter since I was probably younger than 10 years old. The clinic has such a nice blonde woman that I believe does the shot administration, etc. She has been there forever and it’s always such a relief to see her because I knew my (many, 7+) pets were in good hands. You can tell she truly cares for her clients and the pets well beings. I have volunteered here all throughout highschool, foster, cleanup, you name it. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. This is one of the most beautiful and loving shelter I have ever been to and will continue to work with them for my adoption and clinical needs. This is my go to!! I believe they’re also no kill

I had a very poor experience here. My only intention was to help the 7 puppies that were abandoned last week. The manager never kept his word to call me the following week to give me more information on the puppies. It was a very long hold time to even get him on the phone not including the major attitude he had with me by just asking him a few questions. The girl that answered the phone also with an attitude as if it was the end of the world by just asking to speak with him or Cristine that I had spoken with the week prior. I do not recommend this location. They are just down right rude and don’t know how to treat anyone. I have a $120 donation that I could have donated to any other worthy cause. Next time I will. The manager also had the nerve to say there is no favoritism here like as if that’s what I wanted. I did not only wanted to be treated with kindness that’s all. He shouldn’t be manager. Maybe the custodian. Since he has no people skills.
