How to Save Money at Space Coast Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My fur kids have been patients of Dr. Pearson for the last 18 years and we couldn't be happier. When I moved to south Brevard I continued to drive the 25 minutes to see Dr. Pearson. I appreciate the time and attention she gives us everytime we visit and have no issue waiting a little longer knowing she gives all her attention to my dogs. Many vet offices over book and churn patients through and this is not the case at Space Coast Vet. I would and do recommend her to all my fellow pet parents. When I had to say goodbye to my sweet Oscar Dr. Pearson and Priscilla drove all the way to Viera to my house so that I didn't have to bring him in to the office. Her prices are well below other local vet offices when compared to what my friends say they are paying. My dogs are my family and I wouldn't trust anyone else with their care.

We took our 2 cats to Space Coast Vet for their yearly annual visit. She informed me that 1 of our cats had an abscess in his mouth and would need to be removed & biopsied and we were given an estimate for the procedure. Upon calling back to schedule the procedure, I informed them they put a medication on the invoice twice. I was told that yes, that was a mistake but it was supposed to be a different medication. Ok, no biggie. However, they then inform me they forgot to add the anesthesia which is $55 per 30 mins. That is a bigger problem and now the estimate is over $100 more at a minimum. Since I can no longer trust them, I go to another vet and am told there is no abscess. He had some gum disease which was causing bad inflammation. Needless to say, the new vet was right and it cost alot less. Unfortunately, I can’t say whether this was a mistake on Dr. Pearson’s part or needing to make some extra money but it’s not a risk we would be willing to take with our animals again. So no, we would not go back. *Added pic after owner response. Clearly says lump removal and histology which is what we were told at the visit and the word abscess was absolutely used.

We paid around $250 to have our dog treated here. The price just included shots, medicine, and a heartworm test. This is far more expensive than what we are used to paying for a yearly vet visit. We left a message on their prescription line stating that we would like a prescription for a specific heartworm preventative. We were clear in the message which one we needed a prescription for. My husband picked it up and paid $2 for it. However, we realized that the prescription that we received was for a different version of the medicine. We didn't want or request for this version of the medicine. We cannot use this prescription at Chewy because it's not for the specific one that we placed the order for. Now I'm forced to cancel my order at Chewy. Even our surname was misspelled on the prescription. We were met with an attitude and told that we were the ones that made the mistake. This is a total lie. We were also told that we had to pay another $2 for the prescription to be rewritten. This place nickels and dimes people. Then, treats customers with disrespect. I wouldn't take my pet here even if it was the last vet hospital on earth.

I took my dog here for the first time yesterday for an emergency appointment which they got us in an hour after I called. They were all very nice and professional. I really like how they do not run unnecessary tests or procedures to keep the cost down unlike some vet's. Would definitely recommend!
