How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I don't know where the 4.6 stars comes from on their rating, but I'd give them negative stars if I could. Took my 17.5 year old cat in for a shoulder sprain and a week later he died in my arms. Staff was nice I went in for a free exam and did x rays etc. Received 3 days of pain meds and enough sedatives to put down an elephant. My cat did great with the pain meds however the sedatives knocked him out for days. Let's get into the lack of knowledge they have... They couldn't get blood from him so they wanted me to bring him back with a full dose of gabapentin 100 mg capsule. No cat should take a full capsule. Not only that they tell me to give him a quarter to a half at home. A quarter of it knocked him out for days. He started getting better but hurt himself again. I didn't want him to injure himself further so I gave him even less than a quarter. Keep in mind these should be measured out or given to an online pharmacy for the correct dosage for my cats weight. This isn't the worst part. The worst part is calling the vet and letting them know we need to be seen and that he's potentially dying in my arms from the pill. Possible renal failure? Did they care? No. I said you don't have time for a euthanasia for a pet you gave the drugs to last week? They said no I hung up. They talk like an automated message * sorry to hear he's laying limp in your arms let me talk to a vet tech to see if you need to be seen* lol wtf. Woman my cats dying and you're going to give me your corporate bs televoice with no empathy or compassion. Oh they told me to take him to the ER 30 min away. I worked at a vet and we NEVER denied a medical emergency. We NEVER sent a client home with capsules that were not portioned out properly. What blows me away is I always gave him LESS then what it said and they wanted me to give him a FULL 100mg cap just so they can get blood because they don't know how to scruff a cat properly to do the proper job. This place lacks knowledge and empathy. I'll never go to a corporate run vet again. Being in the industry I'm sickened by this. Not to mention I walked in the room to a flea on the table and when quoted I was told the exam fee was taken off since I was a new client since I had the coupon . I looked at my bill later and they charged me. Keep in mind she told me it was a fee that was not on there. Check your bills too. Thank God for the compassion of the ER they were the real rock stars .. but my cat died in my arms before we even got there. Just remember they'll turn you away when your baby is dying. This place sucks. Keep in mind during the exam she said he's super healthy and has the bones of a 10 year old cat. My cat was playing and happy before this just hurt himself getting off the counter. He's gone because I made the mistake of taking him somewhere I thought I could trust.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR ILL PET HERE! We brought our recently rescued young English Bull Dog Chunky as his face and eyes were swollen; he was diagnosed with a bad ear infection. They provided a prescription of Simplicef 200mg and ear solutions and he went downhill super-fast. Dr Wagner bedside manner was absolutely the worst and uncaring. They recommended we take him to the Animal Eye Specialist immediately of which we did. He died in his sleep. Needless to say, we spent almost $1000 to and lost our one of our best friends. Check out the other vets in the area before bringing your fur Baby here.

My vet was unaffordable. I brought my dog here to get shots since I was having a hard time paying my vets prices. I thought it was more like a convenient care, but I was able to make this my primary vet. They were so kind, professional, and so much more affordable. My dogs really liked them too!

I am horrified and heartbroken by the lack of care we received from this place. We brought in our young and healthy cat when he suddenly started having violent seizures out of nowhere. Not only did they not take his blood for testing during the appointment, which is standard practice, but were sent home with a urine sample kit to collect ourselves. When we brought back the urine sample for analysis we had to wait another 24 hours for the results. During that 48 hour period our cat died in our arms during a violent seizure. 5 days later and we still hadn’t received a call back with results. I had to call them to ask for the results and told them we need to know if it was toxins because we have another cat and want to make sure he’s not at risk of the same fate. I was told the techs were too busy to speak with me and would call me back within yet ANOTHER 24 hours. My second cat could be at risk of dying but they’re too busy to tell me test results that we should have gotten days ago. I’m appalled, heartbroken, and beyond angry at the complete lack of empathy or care. I could say so much more about the disrespect we received, but I’ll leave it at this. Please save your time, money and potentially your pets life and take them to an actual animal hospital that cares about your pet’s wellbeing.

I have had a terrible experience with them. It started out great and it is affordable but the service is terrible. Every single time we go, they say they cannot find our account and make a new account. Then I call and they cannot find it and say we have not been there. Unorganized. The front desk is rude and not helpful. We tried to bring our dog in for a nail trim, they tried to charge us 90 dollars for it. Called today to get an estimate for a spay and they would not give me one because my dog has not been seen in two months. I would be charged a visit and then given an estimate. I asked to speak to someone else and she refused. Rude and unorganized staff. We are going elsewhere.
