How to Save Money at Northside Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was traveling through the area with my Chihuahua in my van. This van does not have air-conditioning in the back. When I decided to go to the Zoo on the spur of the moment and do some needed grocery shopping, I was looking for a place to board Jack for a few hours. I called around some places until I came to Northside Animal Hospital. As soon as I talked to Ms. Wendy, I knew I had found the place. She understood my predicament, being not from the area. We discussed what I would consider normal expectations and agreed on a fee which was much more reasonable than the other places who wanted to charge for a full 24hr period plus a preliminary 'health check'. I supplied his last records done just about 2 months ago, plus information about the vet, in case there were any questions. When I came to pick him up, he was happy but not 'frantic'! If I did not live so far away, I would definitely use them as my vet. Thank you all of you for making Jack and myself feel so comfortable.

The staff, they are absolutely amazing! They care, they want to help right when you call, they KNOW YOU and YOUR BABIES. The Vets, take time with you and make sure you understand what is going on with each one of your furchildren and their issues. They have a wonderful reminder system so you don't miss something. My babies aren't afraid to go to the vet's office. They all go in with the wiggle butts and can't wait to get behind the counter and greet their friends and down that hallway to see the rest of them. There, everyone is family. They have been for many, many years.

It was time for my girl to cross over to the rainbow last week. She was elderly and had mamory Cancer. The Westside center took us to a quiet room awaiting Dr's evaluation. They were very kind with this procedure and our feelings. I'm very greatful for the techs, vet and front office. She was as peaceful as I could have hoped for. Thank you for your kindness on Wednesday

I love this vet. Everyone here is so nice and understanding. It’s clear they care about our animals and are happy to spend all the time necessary to explain any options and give recommendations. The fact that they do lab work in house makes all the difference. Having to wait on results can be miserable, and here we get everything we need to know before we even leave!

I really loved it until I went to pick my dog up from her bath and she started flinching like someone did something to her. I called and talked to the lady at the desk. She said she'd call back and never did. Lily is with me always unless she needs grooming. She is in my arms almost all day long and has never EVER flinched. While I was there one of the ladies at the desk joked about muzzling her dog. I wouldn't recommend this place if you want your dog to not flinch when you go to pick them up. It absolutely breaks my heart. It was the last time we were going there anyway because we moved. I had just thanked them all for being so amazing with her and this happens. This is little Lily
