How to Save Money at Animal Cancer Care Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We come to this clinic to see the eye doctor. However, the place itself is clean with good parking and the staff is very friendly. I think the world of Dr. Buss who had previously cared for my older dog's eye problems with compassion and understanding. Of course we came to see Dr. Buss when our new collie puppy had an eye issue. His knowledge of collie eye issues was very apparent and he took the time to carefully explain everything to us. As a physician myself, I find his knowledge to be extensive, especially given the many breeds he cares for, yet he is readily able to explain complex concepts and was patient with our many questions. I highly recommend.

We went to animal care clinic in December 2022 and received treatment through July of 2023. I want to clarify that there are 3 groups that work here: the front desk, the doctors, and the vet assistants. My Sheltie had been fighting cancer for over 2 years and radiation was his last hope. When I spoke with the doctor he explained that he was almost a research doctor that wants to cure pet cancer (great) but has no idea the cost of anything he recommends (more on that later). The front desk staff is friendly but in 2 cases I was double charged for things when they presented the bill, they are so used to processing $500+ bills it doesn’t phase them that this is real money. Finally we get to the vet assistants which are terrible. These are the liaison between you and the vet (typical in vet offices) but the staff they have acts “slimy” acting condensing to you when describing what your pet is going through. They don’t really listen to you and you are playing telephone to the vet at best, then taking your words, translating it to the vet, the vet responding, and then coming back to you… so their voice comes across very strong. Our Sheltie had their deluxe radiation treatment spending over 14k to treat his cancer. The doctor treated his cancer as a research program wanting to run needless tests that would cost us 1000s of dollars but wouldn’t change his course of treatment. Specifically they recommended X-rays and mris using their leased machines and a radiologist that can see “shadows” to the result of the 12k treatment which we did but it just let us know that the 12k won’t save your animal instead they will just die of lung cancer first. Most recently when we went asking for help when our animal suffering they again recommended X-rays when they knew he was dying of lung cancer and there was no course of treatment available…. They are happy to take our money however but the level of service on a scale of 1-10 is a 3-4 at best. They have tools that your pet may need BUT they are a profit center and I hope you have means to pay, also once you demonstrate means to pay they don’t will recommend expensive treatments without explaining how this will help your animal. We lost our fight even though our little man tried his best and I honestly don’t know if what they did added even a single day to his life but it certainly weakened him and made his last days harder on me.

Our kitty was there for five days for his palliative radiation. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Lyons and his amazing staff!! Everyday a phone call with an update. When we came to pick him up we were greeted by a nurse holding him with a graduation cap and she was followed by four other staff members. Everyone showed such love and emotion for our baby as we said our thank you’s and goodbye’s! The hugs and kisses were plentiful! My family, I and most importantly our kitty are so very thankful for all that you have done! You guys are the best!!!

We brought our dog King here for 5 treatments of palliative radiation with Dr. Lyons. Our experience was great (considering what we were there for). Every time he went in he came back out with a big smile, and the process was as smooth as possible thanks to their professionalism and kindness.
