How to Save Money at Animal Dermatology & Allergy

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is a tricky one for me. First I will say the office staff is pleasant and professional. The dr., like others in the medical field, while not unkind, wasn't the type for easy conversation. I guess some would say reserved. I have a couple of concerns and that's what makes this review challenging. I was slow in getting the allergy serum once it was ready bc I live so far away. I finally opted to have it shipped. I think due to the holidays my request got overlooked but a simple phone call resolved that. My other concern bothers me a little more. When discussing the arranged allergy skin test, the doc never told me what materials they would test for and I didn't think to ask. The outcome is that Tucker was not tested for food allergies. We've had him on a special diet at the recommendation of our vet, but that's all based on assumption, not science. And since he's continued to suffer allergic reactions, I don't know if he is or isn't allergic to beef. Frustrating....the only solution would be to risk introducing meat products but is that wise since we are injecting doses of environmental allergens? Simply stated, testing for food allergens as well as environmental would have answered these questions definitively. I feel as lost as I did the day we went there.

I highly recommend this place. The whole staff at Animal Dermatology and Allergy is very pleasant on the phone and during services. If I have a question or need an appointment everything is seamless. My dog Chase has been a patient of Dr.Burkette’s for the last two years. He is not the easiest to deal with and gets stressed easily at appointments. I love the fact that he is not treated any differently because of this. I need to mention Dr. Burkett. He is very smart and knowledgeable of his speciality along with veterinary medicine. My dog has an immune disorder of his nails. From day one I have been highly satisfied with Dr. Burkett’s communication and care plan for my dog. We have had positive results from all of it and have no complaints. At my last appointment I could tell Dr.Burkett was concerned about my dog and his physical appearance that was beyond his nail issues. I had spoke to him about some of my concerns that I had as well. He ordered a few blood tests. Got some of the results back and sure enough something else was going on. Got confirmation today from more tests. Had he not ordered the tests or been concerned everything I had concerns about would probably still be getting passed off as Chase’s nail issues. I am so thankful to Dr. Burkett for being concerned about Chase, communicating with me and also taking the time to listen to me.

Had my dog there for a 1 year therapy. Did absolutely nothing. All they care about is bringing your dog over there for visits so they can look at your pet for 2 minutes to determine “yep he’s still scratching” . Thank you for nothing ! If you have too much money and don’t know where you can waste it , bring it to these people ! They’ll gladly take it !

I cannot speak highly enough of Animal Dermatology & Allergy and Dr. Glen Burkett! When our beloved dog started scratching himself to the point of injury, we sought out Dr. Burkett for his expertise. We were initially unsure if our dog’s issues were food-related or due to environmental factors. Dr. Burkett’s methodical approach gave us a clear path forward. Dr. Burkett recommended a hydrolyzed diet of rabbit, something our dog had never eaten before. This dietary trial was designed to determine if food allergies were the cause of his itching, as food allergies don’t show up on skin tests and are less expensive to diagnose. When the scratching persisted despite the new diet, it confirmed that our dog’s allergies were environmental. Dr. Burkett then conducted a skin test, which revealed that our dog is allergic to grass, dust, weeds, and even human dander. While managing these environmental allergies will be more challenging than addressing a food allergy, we are incredibly grateful to finally know the specific triggers. Dr. Burkett’s thorough testing and clear explanations have provided us with a solid plan to help our dog build immunity and live a more comfortable life. The expertise and care at Animal Dermatology & Allergy have made a world of difference for our furry family member, and we look forward to continuing this journey under their guidance.

I don’t know what I would’ve done if I had not found Dr. Burkett. My dog was struggling for years and has seen many vets with no resolution. I felt confident about Dr. Burketts treatment plan after my initial visit and my instincts were right! We still have a long way to go before my Lilly is fully healed but she is way more comfortable than she’s ever been! Thank you Dr. Burkett and his lovely staff for taking such good care of my baby
