How to Save Money at Grace Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Can't say enough good things about Dr. John. He's an outstanding veterinarian and surgeon. He spayed my english bulldogs and also removed a lump on one of their chest/underarm area, with precision, you would never know she had surgery. The scar is unnoticeable, and she has no issues with leg movement. He is also extremely knowledgeable. He is fair and honest with his pricing. He does not try to gouge you with sales tactics or try to test for 16 obscure things. Dr. John also put our beloved Boston Terrier to sleep, with much love and dignity to our fur baby. The office was silent and calm. He gave us as much time as we needed to say goodbye. While holding other patients until we left, which we thought was very gracious of him. No one in the waiting room minded a very slight inconvenience to their day and also made sure to tell us they were sorry. Zsa Zsa and Stella both run right in to see Dr. John, he's always ready for some bulldog kisses and gets on the floor with them and gives them a hug and kiss. Can't ask for a better Vet!

I have never met John O'Laughlin or stepped foot in the veterinarians office. I called him 9/20/23 to speak to him about a clinic finding report he had written up a few days earlier on a puppy that was brought to him by one of his clients, Patricia Theroux. She had purchased the puppy from me three weeks earlier, in August. I questioned him about his diagnosis of the puppy because he was wrong. The more I pressed him for an explanation, the angrier he got to where he started screaming at the top of his lungs (No exaggeration) and slammed the phone down. Luckily I had read his reviews and learned that this man can be quite unprofessional at times so I wasn't too shocked by his response to me. The following is what I had called him about to discuss and is an excerpt of the email I sent him since he had disregarded and ignored what I was asking him on the phone. "This clinical report also states very clearly that on 9/15/23 at 5:28 that YOU observed MANGE. This is what the customer called and told me and of course as a very responsible breeder I offered to buy back such a sick puppy!!!! They arrived Sunday and presented me with a beautiful healthy puppy. I do not refund for healthy surrenders per contract they signed. They are pissed!!!! Your inaccurate and ridiculous clinic summary of peanut has caused me so much damage. It is also impossible to diagnose cryptorchidism in a 13 old week 2 and a half pound small puppy!!! His scrotal sac hasn't even developed. Your inaccurate diagnosis of Unilateral Cryptorchid at 13 weeks old should have been, can only palpate right testicle at this time and clearly explained to customer the length of time it could take for a puppy's testicles to fully descend into the scrotal sac once the scrotal sac has even developed. They have filed a police report against me, made a false animal control report against me and I'm very sure as soon as all that is dismissed, they will be civil suing me. You are the one they should have done this to NOT ME!!!!! I would like you to at least correct the report with the correct information and let the customer know. THEY SURRENDERED THEIR PUPPY BECASUE OF YOUR CLINICAL FINDINGS. I have offered the puppy back to them, but they only believe what you said about him and think that he is plagued with major medical issues. Thanks a lot! I lost a buyer, this puppy lost a great home and you lost peanut as a client. They claim to be so traumatized by all this that they don't ever want to own another dog. I spent well over a year with them finding and waiting for the right time and puppy and you ruined it in one appointment." This is just my opinion, this doctor led the owners of the puppy to believe they had less of a puppy because he was not a pure bred and not worth the money they paid so these health issues were invented to trick the breeder (me) into going against my contract and refunding them for an unhealthy puppy. Thru multiple text between myself and Patricia, she mentions multiple times that the puppy isn't worth the money she paid??? These comments only happened after her vet visit with this Dr on Sept 15th up until then I had only received texts saying how great he was. They drove 3 hours to return the puppy and presented me with the happiest, healthiest puppy ever so I refused to refund and they are PISSED, at me, WHY? My opinion comes from, I have proven to them that their Dr was wrong and the puppy is healthy and they refused to take the puppy back and only want a refund. I am attaching pictures of the puppy the day she returned him and the Dr's report. I also have to add the note, within one week of surrender he was given a clean bill of health by two veterinarians and an Animal Control officer, compliments of Patricia's false allegations about bunches of puppy's being sick with mange at my house. That report and the police report (for not giving her money back), she filed, were proven unfounded by both agencies.

I would be very careful with this vet. Has lost his temper with our fur baby and didn’t refer us when needed. A talented surgeon but not there when we needed him most. It would greatly benefit them to add a holistic, advanced medicine aspect to their staff. Modern, integrative medicine is needed or there’s more damage going to be caused.
