How to Save Money at St Charles Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We just took in our baby, Archie, to their emergency room. We were immediately taken back to an exam room where the vet tech was so sweet to our boy. The entire staff was patient and so loving to him and that brought me a lot of peace and comfort. In total we were there for 3 hours and spent $145 for the emergency room fee and $150 for medication. Also, we were provided a comprehensive treatment plan with costs associated so we could make the best informed decision for our baby! We are thankful to live so close to such a kind, knowledgeable and caring staff at St. Charles! Archie thanks you! ❤️

I never imagined we’d lose our cat before she turned 20… A month ago she was a spritely, happy 15 year old kitty, but she took a sudden turn last week. We had taken her to a vet who only looked at her for 30 seconds and sent us home with a few prescriptions and some “urgent care” food. Sadly, the next day she was much worse and I brought her to St. Charles. After a quick assessment, the doctor mentioned she was very dehydrated, possibly had a heart murmur, and she was concerned about electrolytes, among other things. I think people on these reviews are focused so much on the cost that they don’t catch the options being presented to them. Yes, if we wanted to run tests, hospitalize her, and take a CHANCE on saving her, we could spend $1800-$6000. OR, we could choose to euthanize because quality of life would never be the same for her. Yes, the treatment will be expensive. But if you’d like the option of POTENTIALLY saving your pet, that’s what it is. Bella was made comfortable when she crossed the rainbow bridge. We sobbed and they allowed us space to grieve. It’s never easy losing a pet, but the staff were helpful and kind.

I know this place has received some bad reviews but honestly the vet tech working July 1, 2023 was a sweetheart. She was genuinely kind, patient, answered all questions, and it was clear she has a genuinely compassionate nature. The vet working that night took her time when examining my little Prairie Dog, Monkey is his name. She was very knowledgeable, honest, and I was grateful that she looked at all avenues and offered reasonable options with respect to Monkey’s care and what we may face in the future. I felt very comfortable with her expertise regarding his condition. I truly felt we were in the best hands possible. The only downside we experienced is being told after we arrived that it could be a 6 to 8 wait! We had traveled over an to get there and I was rather shocked to hear this. I understand other animals could come in and be in critical condition and need immediate care but I felt that maybe having additional vets available could help meet this need. Monkey is home and is getting better and I want to say thank you for quality and compassionate care.

After posting a one-star review (with no caption), St. Charles Vet Hospital informed me they'd no longer care for my pets. They even declined emergency treatment, citing my review as a "breach of trust." I had given that review because they aggressively pushed for us to euthanize our 2-year-old epileptic dog, going as far as threatening to report us for not heeding their advice. Two years later, our dog is thriving, thanks to us refusing their plea to put her down. It's deeply concerning that an emergency vet would prioritize their image over an animal's life. This is an unethical, profit-driven facility that does not deserve support.
