How to Save Money at BluePearl Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

After hearing all the horror stories, it was hard having to bring my dog Mango into Blue Pearl as a first time dog owner. Two times we have had emergencies and come here and had nothing but the best experiences. First time was for a minor accident, a slit in her ear that they could do nothing about. They sent us home and charged us nothing. I was so surprised. She healed up just fine and I was glad they didn’t try to charge any unnecessary fees. This was maybe 3 years ago. Yesterday Mango started suffering from symptoms of Bloat. I, being familiar with this as a large dog owner, knew the symptoms and knew that an emergency surgery may be her only hope. I called Blue Pearl, even though we are five minutes away. They somehow took our information through my hysterics. They said “bring her in now.” I did. She did need surgery. It was that or euthanasia. Thank goodness I was able to make the expensive decision for surgery. The high bill hurt, but in the end, didn’t matter at all. My dog survived and not many dogs do. She is also home the next day and doing amazing. Thank you so much to her surgeon and all of the staff from the front desk to the surgery staff and nurses. They could not have made this traumatic situation any easier. We will always bring our pets here for emergencies, no matter the cost. It was all worth it.

Very nice staff and extremely clean facility. From one veterinary professional to another, it was nice to be around like minded individuals who care about our pets as much as their own. I wasn’t sure how Dixie would do at another veterinary hospital since she’s used to my clinic but the staff loved her and showed her lots of love and attention. Very knowledgeable doctor and veterinary nurses. Highly recommend!

I brought my 3 year old rabbit here 2 nights ago as she was unable to move. They were very cold and handed me paperwork immediately asking if I was willing to pay $1800 for resuscitation if it came to that. I was shocked because i didnt think she was dying but i knew she wasnt well. There are no payment plans and they want payment upfront before treatment. They then explained they didn't know what was wrong with her and if I wanted to find out and treat her, I'd need to pay $4,000+ in advance to find out or pay close to $500 to euthanize her. I like many others do not have $4,000 to spend so I chose euthenasia, and I did not want her to suffer for long. They messed up the euthanasia the first round after injecting her and I noticed it was taking a long time and after looking concerned and walking away to talk to each other they realized they did not have her catheter in properly and had to redo it. So I had to wait for them to redo the catheter in the lobby and come back in a second time for them to get it right and come back in to be with her while she was euthanized. It was very drawn out and I felt awful for my poor girl as I didn't want her suffering so long and also did not want her surrounded by strangers in her last moments. I thought they would take us into a private room to have her euthenized but they kept us in the back with all of the other sick animals and at one point a nurse was struggling with a sick puppy and it was very loud and she was loudly asking for assistance to control him only 10 feet away from us so it was hard to stay focused on keeping my baby comfortable and calm. Not to mention they wouldn't do any of this until I paid in full. When they put her in a box after she passed they also gave me the carrier i brought her in. I had to first bring her carrier outside to the curb and then return in to retrieve her body in the box without any assistance. When waiting in the lobby for her second attempt at euthanasia there were two employees laughing and joking behind the desk while I'm literally sobbing my eyes out. These people and this company do not care about your animals and money is their main priority! Do your research and find another emergency vet!

Very kind and compassionate team. We were referred here by our vet when our dog needed surgery. You know they are good when your vet tells you this is the Er she uses for her pets. Blue Pearl was responsive and patient and took great care of our dog. Communication was great! They even took my calls throughout the night when I called to check on her. I am happy to say that our dog made it through. You get what you pay for.

Great facility. I’m so happy they are nearby and open 24 hours. They were very caring and compassionate. Since we weren’t critical we had a very long wait, but we were put in a room so my kitten could be out of the carrier.
