How to Save Money at VCA Baywood Animal Hospital & Pet Resort
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I needed to board my dog Jack for the Memorial Day weekend and being new to the area I wasn't sure who I could trust. Where we used to live my dog's vet was with VCA so it was nice to see there was a VCA here in Cape Coral and they also had a pet resort. So for me, it was a win win situation. It was so easy to transfer Jack's records over here since both veterinarians are under VCA. Before boarding I took him in to get caught up on his vaccines and to establish a relationship with the new vet. Everyone there was so friendly, patient and professional. Boarding him here was a breeze they didn't require prescreening like some other boarding places in the area. They didn't require unnecessary vaccines, just the main ones. Baywood does one on one care with the animals so the dogs get the full attention of the technician, which I loved. When I dropped off Jack the boarding tech came to pick him up at the waiting room and asked me to leave him like you would a child on the first day of kindergarten. I thought it was funny but I totally understood. When I picked up Jack he was happy to see me and the boarding tech. told me how it did. I took him home and bathed him (my choice) and he passed out on the couch. Now Jack has only been boarded twice before this and both times they were not pleasant. Both times he was boarded was in Broward county on the east coast of Florida. One time he caught kennel cough (he was vaccinated) and the other time he came back hoarse and with a rash on his stomach. When I picked up Jack at Baywood he was peppy, he wasn't hoarse, didn't get any illnesses, nothing. If you don't mind not having all the perks of a pool, live webcams and group playtime then I would highly recommend this pet resort. The only thing I would have loved is to see the inside where they slept, to see how big it is. This will be our go to place for boarding Jack when he can't come with us.

If I could add negative stars I would and I’d BEG anyone considering going here to not even bother. Go literally anywhere else. Our family dog was brought here and treated incorrectly for hookworms and unfortunately ended up dying today due to their negligence. They charged us $900 and put her on medication knowing the detox of those hookworm toxins could potentially kill her. They sent her home with medication that killed her today and we now lost a family member and they literally haven’t even called to follow up and see how she was doing with the meds they recommended. Literally a garbage vet with garbage staff that kills animals. Save your babies and go elsewhere

We recently had the pleasure of meeting the staff at VCA Baywood when we were looking for a new vet for our new rescue puppies. We contacted them in an emergency situation and we were terribly worried for our babies and had been up all night with them. When we called other vets in the morning, they were all business and no heart and didn’t have time to listen to me, let alone see us. Then we called VCA Baywood, and we tearfully explained our situation and they listened patiently and with empathy, then told us to come in (on a Saturday) and they would see us and reassured us that everything would be ok. They were wonderful! From the moment they answered the phone, to the entire staff upon arriving- everyone was so friendly and compassionate. I was really surprised. I guess I expected to be treated like the other places I called earlier, like I was a number or a dollar sign. This office treated us like family, and treats our babies like their own. We have been back a few times and this is the only place I want to trust with my babies now. I really am grateful to have them in our community, I highly recommend for your pets needs too.

Baywood and Dr. Smith have always been wonderful to us and our dogs. We have been customers for almost 15 years. From the front desk to the vet techs we have always had an amazing experience and have recommended them more than we can count.

Baywood has been taking care of our dogs for a decade now and not once have I questioned an expense, suggested treatment, etc. Dr Smith is a gem. She adopts so many animals in need and takes great care of them. We enjoy her rehabilitation stories so very much. Most importantly Dr Smith takes the time to explain the issues, various solutions and she doesn't rush through any of it. If she took people as patients, I would be the first to sign up. The staff are always friendly and spend the time to learn their patients. They care and it shows.
