How to Save Money at Haven Lake Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had to bring my crested gecko in to get his left hemipene amputated and this was a great experience. My regular vet couldn’t do the surgery and we called 7 other clinics within a 2hr radius. No one offered the surgery, even the 24hr exotic er didn’t do the surgery! Thankfully another clinic suggested Haven Lake since they didn’t come up in my search results or local reptile group. Was very straight forward in my opinion, though for a person who isn’t as knowledgeable about reptiles they might of been left with not as much information regarding the surgery itself, but since my partner and I have been rescuing reptiles for 8 years we already knew the procedure. Prices were fair as well, but I also work at a dog and cat er, sooo that might not be what others think but less than $700 for an emergency surgery when we are not clients of the clinic and this was a more nuanced surgery I think is all fair. Dr. Hennen was great and hopefully it doesn’t happen but I’d go back for another surgery. Not all the praise goes to the doctor though as the receptionist were very friendly and efficient. They even went out of their way to confirm the doctor did that type of surgery when she didn’t know what a hemipene was (as I felt with other clinics they weren’t knowledgeable about the anatomy term and were just saying no right off the bat because they didn’t understand it.)🤍 Update: Only issue we had is when we received our liquid medication already in syringes they were plunger side up in a bottle with no caps. This caused the super small amount of med to come out in the bottom of the pill container they put in. We realized this on Sunday that all five doses were gone, so our pet only got a single dose at home on Saturday. They were closed Sunday so we had to wait till Monday to call. My partner called the office 4 separate times at different times and kept being put on hold and then disconnected on. When he was able to talk to a receptionist he reported that they kept sighing on the phone as he spoke then the phone disconnected again. Finally when he asked for a manager they said they couldn’t speak to him so he asked for a tech then they actually talked to him. Which this tech was helpful but understandably didn’t have all the answers and has to contact the doctor. Though the tech admitted the syringes should have at the least been put with the syringe side up, but not everyone caps the syringes and that we should of been told at the least to hold the bottle upside down than, but we were not informed that at all. The manager informed the tech we could not get a refund as it was too small an amount and it was over 24hrs after the surgery. Mind you they were closed Sunday and we had a dose for Saturday. Also $10 isn’t a lot yea, but after paying over $600 and in today’s economy it would be nice to have the money back we didn’t get a chance to use. We cannot drive down to get a refill as it is over an hour drive one way and they said they cannot fax or email a script to my place of work which is also a vet office. The first experience was super great, but this update has dulled it for us.

The best team BY FAR! Such grace, love, kindness, and just the ultimate gem of humans to exist. The dedication, intelligence, and overall skills everyone on the team holds is something so special and magical. We cannot be thankful enough for every examination, physical, and blood work panel done. The team is always descriptive, reassuring, and allows us to know everything about our Furbabies. Biggest shout out to Dr Natalie, Dr Stephanie, Sam and Zoe!!!! (And I am so sorry I forget the front desk girls name, I want to say Hayley?) and Edna! Dream team. - Tori & John

Brought our newly adopted 8 year old Yorkie in for dental and back concerns. I had his old records emailed to Haven Lake and Dr. Adkins had thoroughly reviewed them prior to our visit. She was thorough and extremely compassionate and provided a detailed cost estimate of her recommendations. Bloodwork and X-rays were taken. She spent time with us explaining the X-rays, and even called me the next day to discuss lab results. If I could give her 10 stars I would! Dr. Adkins is a good listener, compassionate , thorough and I highly recommend her.
