How to Save Money at West Haven Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Whoever is at the desk on December 16, 2023 she needs to be fired. I called to make an appointment for my cat who has gotten bitten by a tick. I found a tick on my cat the night before I removed it with tweezers and made sure I got every piece of the takeout. The next morning, my cat was acting a little different than usual he vomit, clear liquid he didn’t want to eat, and he seemed restless, and would not stay in one spot!! I called The West Haven clinic, which my cat visit once for an ear infection back in July. When she picked up I explained to her all of his symptoms, and all I asked for, is to make an appointment for tomorrow. This lady literally kept making up excuses of everything in the book on what to do, and would not give me an appointment!!! She bring up the price she bring up things maybe that I have been doing at home etc etc. and I explain to her I know my cat and I watch him closely. He seems a little different and I do not care how much it cost. I want to get my cat checked out. She didn’t care, and she kept going on with excuses. I then told her I will find another veterinarian, perhaps his old veterinarian that he used to go to prior to this West Haven clinic. She then hung up in my face. I never heard of a veterinarian, not wanting to take in a animal for a serious reason!! And I’m sure it’s not the doctors because I actually met one of the doctors and he did a awesome job with my cat. It’s the receptionist at the front desk that think they know everything like I said she needs to be fired for refusing care to an animal.

I adopted my kitten at the West Haven Animal Clinic . The staff is very polite and friendly. Including Worker June who’s been there for sometime now as exceptionally helpful. I also helped my neighbor adopt a kitten from the same litter.

Took our Long hair black cat Midna to have her spayed. They did a beautiful job and she was treated so wonderfully. The staff all fell on love with her..we actually adopted her from this hospital.

I had taken my pets to West Haven Animal Clinic for years and was satisfied. They need more veterinarians to handle the too large population of patients they accept.Sometimes they triple book appointments. The other veterinarians did not stay. However, Dr. Feldman was wonderful to me and my pets. He is extremely patient, caring and empathetic. On 9/3/23 Dr. Padilla gave my 13 yo Cavapoo Tucker two different medications by injection that there was no strong clinical indication for. He did not ask me if I wanted lab work done before injections to my senior dog. My dog went into kidney failure and stopped eating immediately after injections. I had to euthanize him one month later. Lab work done after the two medications revealed renal (kidney) failure.

I had my dogs ears cropped at this clinic. I wish I would never even done it. The dogs ears were cropped uneven. He still has the stitches 3 weeks later after 3 visits. This made the dog so uncomfortable all I could do was tell him I was sorry. I would never recommend ear cropping especially from this place. The Dr is nice but he apparently does not have it in him anymore to do the job. Stay far from this place.
