How to Save Money at VCA Veterinary Specialists of CT
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

AVOID IF YOU LOVE YOUR PET AT ALL COSTS! They killed our cat and gave no treatment despite telling us they gave him an IV for $400. This place is a cash grab with no compassion. Guilt shaming me and my girl into paying $5000 for exploratory surgery. How can people get their hands on that kind of money at night time? And shame on them for making us wait for hours just so we'd have time to come up with the money 💰 Please save your auto-generated reply. You can't bring our cat back from the dead. You are heartless for your tactics in how you extort people for money. The second you hand your pet over for "care" you lose all your leverage. This is when the extortion begins.

Vet Specs emergency hospital is hands down the best in the area. Dr. Yelton, Dr Umam and Dr Usechak saved my dogs life. The care they gave to him, as well as their amazing communication with us during his week stay, was outstanding. After a horrible experience at another animal hospital, I was so grateful to finally get the proper care our fur baby needed. I am forever grateful for this team and I highly recommend to anyone who is considering taking their pet there.

THEY WILL KILL YOUR PET!! Brought my dog in for respiratory issue, she was brought back and they had her wait 2 hours just to do an x-ray the next thing I knew is they were calling me into a room to tell me my dog was in cardiac arrest. She died in their care and I was billed an arm and a leg. I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO HAS EXPERIENCED THIS! My great aunts dog died in their care and a family friend recently told me the same thing happened to them at this place. THEY ARE A MONEY HUNGRY COMPANY, THEY WILL RACK UP YOUR BILL AND YOU WILL LEAVE WITHOUT YOUR PET! PLEASE IF YOU LOVE YOUR ANIMALS DO NOT BRING THEM HERE PLEASE! these people are incompetent and you will leave heartbroken.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR DYING ANIMALS here! This Is Midnight He Was my first kitten and only 3 months and was 2 pounds when we brought him here he loved eating very much but kept vomiting his food till I slowly saw this little guys life leave him and he stopped eating altogether and the only thing the Vet could do was leave us waiting in the room for hours while they connived ways to extort us for basically no treatment other than the claim that they gave her fluids in an IV my Boyfriend and I spent most of our night waiting for them to do something for our cat while he spent his last moments in the company of strangers. They did not bother comforting us in any way shape or form. This Place Should Be SHUT Down because of their negligence they hold your animal hostage until you pay their 400 dollar charge which gave us nothing. If you love your Animals for the love of God don’t bring them to this Cemetery please . Update : I see their response but can’t fathom how they could even think of potentially fixing it they just respond for OPTICS

We used the emergency room at the VA Vet Specialists of CT West Hartford after our cat (Smudge) had an unexpected stroke. We were terrified and didn't know what to do. The receptionists assessed our cat upon arrival and we were seen immediately, despite the crowded waiting room. Given the severity of the situation, we were seen right away. The Vet was extremely compassionate, knowledgeable, and gave us the information we needed to make an informed decision to sadly put our cat down. It was an incredibly tough day but we felt we were in great hands with the staff and experts at VCA, and everyone we interacted with (reception, vet, billing, techs) could not have been kinder.
