How to Save Money at VCA Davis Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Been coming here for years. I wouldn't recommend them. Unfortunately my dog is 13 now and. Seems like when your doing any exams it's you the owner who has to tell them where everything is. I've done exams and when I send her with my wife they seem to miss things if you don't point them out. They have also gotten very expensive..

For the most part these veterinarians are excellent. I would not hesitate to recommend VCA Davis to a friend. The only thing I find difficult are their prices which I find extremely high. However, when your dog is sick you want good competence and fast service. That they provide.

Being a dog owner and having a professional and reliable vet was a challenge, but the minute we walked in the door I knew we have found the vet we have been looking for. Dr.Alie and her tech (sorry forgot her name) were absolutely amazing & very personable. I appreciate that she did not push things and was aware of all my concerns with both of my dogs. We have 1yr old Golden retriever & a 13yr old dachshund and she was the vet they needed! I would also like to mention your staff member Rose was everything that someone that works with people and animals should be. She was so kind and patient and work through all my questions financially and appointments wise!! Rose was very very helpful! I am glad that my dogs have a vet they can depend on!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much Brittany, Siimba and Jameson!!

Avoid this vet at all costs unless you are ok with sky rocketing costs here. The doctors are awesome but even they aren’t sure why all the costs of their services have gone up except for the fact that they are now part of a very large corporation. I was recently charged $71 for my dog’s anal glands. A simple procedure that is done by a technician which takes about 5 minutes. The cost of this procedure has gone up astronomically over the past few years. Every few months they add a few dollars to this service. In the summer of was $66. Not it’s $71. When I spoke to the hospital manager all he could tell me is that price of “things” have gone up. When I asked to speak with someone in the corporate office about policies around price hikes, he said he wasn’t sure who to connect me with and he was the person to speak with. When I mentioned that it didn’t seem as if he had an understanding for what I was asking, he got very upset and said I had offended him. I’m not really sure where to go with this kind of response after being a loyal customer for 5 years. I’ve also referred friends who have become clients. Greenwich/stamford, vets are a dime a dozen, don’t bother with this place. They seem to be more interested in the money grab than keeping your animal as a client. It’s too bad because their docs are wonderful..

I'm genuinely appalled over how rude some of the staff are at this establishment, I literally just received a phone call over a payment that didn't go through and the man over the phone rudely spoke over me, had a sassy attitude and started interrogating me about it as if people who struggle with money DON'T exist. Like, god forbid I needed that money for food this week and that's why it's declining (which is the actual reason WHY it's declining.) Like, yeah, I understand it's frustrating the payment didn't go through but who in their right mind would want to miss a payment? Unfortunately not all of us can afford a monthly vet bill and I just barely scrape through affording to. But this isn't even the first or only time the professionalism at this establishment had me taken aback, I was also misinformed about the subscription and I quote "you can cancel at any time." Is what I was told by a staff, which is okay, I understand maybe she didn't know and didn't want to intentionally cause long-term problems. But then reading the fine print I questioned if it was entirely true, and proceeded with it. Because it was all we could afford at the time with our dog passing away so abruptly. But then there's also the situation when our dog passed and the woman was handing us his ashes only for her to be giggling and laughing when she did while my husband and I were standing there with our eyes filled in tears. Like, I don't understand, are they not informing their staff on how to speak to people and or not giving them the information they need to properly give accurate information to their guests? I don't know, and honestly, all these things make me just want to take my business elsewhere once the subscription is over. And mind you, the subscription is for a dog that HAS ALREADY PASSED to add salt into the wound.
