How to Save Money at Cornell University Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We used Cornell after we were told our Australian Shepherd may be sensitive to anesthesia and no one could identify the mass growing in his lower incisors. We met with Dr. Geddes a board certified dentist. He made us feel very comfortable that our pup would be in good hands and that he had seen these masses before as well as being familiar with the breed. From the consultation he felt it wasn’t a major concern, but at the surgery labs would still be sent out. Drop off was 8:30am and we received a call after lunch that all was well and he would be ready at 3:30. He was clean, alert and ready to go home. Follow up from the hospital was great and the follow up visit was also reassuring and part of the total payment. The only issue I could say was that it took almost 6 months to get an appointment. But with so few specialists in this area/ field it was worth the wait. Lastly, we just got another pup and enrolled him in an insurance plan. This was an expensive (but worth it) procedure and I had wished I had insurance.

They gave me the first available appointment I could find anywhere for my very sick puppy for which I will always be grateful because I was becoming sick with stress and anxiety. Very well run and pleasant so far. Important to get my pup at least staged and seen so I could know where he stands. The out come may not be what is best for us but to do all I can for my pet is always my wish. Waiting for one more test result to see if further treatment makes since for him. Update DB Cooper is responding well to chemotherapy and I am enjoying every moment I can with DB Cooper. So very thankful I have pet insurance because so many especially with the price of even food these days would need to make tough choices. Edwina Love we thank you !!!

Very pleased with my veterinary specialist consult for canine oral melanoma. My experience= responsive communications, caring & very knowledgeable medical staff (referring to the veterinarian specialist and vet tech). Particularly valuable to me was the integrative medical perspective coupled with thoughtful and concise treatment plan discussion by veterinary professionals. Simply the best. My highest recommendation. Veterinarian's comprehensive analysis of my pet's medical condition & ability to communicate the resulting medical plan most appreciated.

THANK YOU CORNELL VET TEAM, YOU ARE THE BEST!!!! The wonderful doctors and staff have saved 2 of my dogs lives. These doctors are exceptional. I have have lived all over the United States (CA, FL, PA, NY, AZ, VA etc), have seen a lot of veterinarians, and I can tell you Cornell is THE BEST!! It can cost a little more, but for the quality, precision and care it is worth it. I especially like the communication, they are very thorough and make sure you know exactly what is going on including printing out research information to take home and read. They also respond immediately whenever I call or email. I cannot say enough about how great Cornell Vet is. Thank you for saving Chopper and Jacqueline Kennedy ! ❤️

Our consultation with Dr. Morgan was above and beyond - I can't say enough positive things about our first visit at your hospital. The amount of time he spent with us explaining everything and answering any questions we had was truly amazing - I was shocked to look at the time at the end of the appointment because I've never had a vet spend that much time with us and care so much. I can confidently say we are in the best hands possible for my dog's recent cancer diagnosis. Thank you so so much!
