How to Save Money at Meghan DeLucia

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Newtown Veterinary Specialists strikes again! And NOT in a good way. We left this facility without treatment. While waiting for care we heard the receptionist speaking to someone with a pet that was clearly in dire need of care. We heard her warn the party on the phone that given this was a labored breathing issue, someone would immediately take the pet upon arrival and to not to be alarmed by this. We also heard her perform standard intake on what we ultimately learned was a cat that couldn’t breathe. We heard her verify the client’s name, the pet’s name, verify old records and confirm a cell phone number. At any point during this conversation or during the next 20 minutes (as I assume this family was driving in) these poor people could have been warned and avoided what happened next. Upon arrival they were ushered into a room, their cat (we could hear the labored breathing) was taken in another direction. Almost one hour later they were ushered out of the facility while being told they were being denied treatment. We heard them ask repeatedly why and the answer was pat: this was a management decision and there was no management there to explain it to them. We left immediately thereafter and went to another clinic. There’s no way we’d ever allow anyone this uncaring anywhere near our dogs. Someone should press charges against this facility. How do you send people and gravely ill animals away like this without care when this is in fact the entire premise of your business? It’s inhumane, unconscionable and so lacking in even basic compassion that it’s not to be believed. Sadly, it’s the reality at this facility that no one should ever, ever frequent.

Attention all readers! I’m asking this facility NOT to counter-post an inane comment about how they “care” and want to “resolve” this issue, followed by a request to “please” call them. If they do? We will all definitively know that they don’t read our reviews and further, don’t care and never will. Report Newtown Veterinary Specialists to the appropriate authorities including the Connecticut State Board of Veterinary Medicine! Rest assured I am NOT complaining about rates. This is an emergency clinic and I fully expect to and do pay a premium. In return, I expect a very high level of care, commensurate with fees. Four years ago this house of horrors kept my dog overnight and gave her back to me completely unable to walk and non-responsive. They literally handed me a carrier with a barely breathing animal, a bag of meds and no instructions. Via a subsequent call I learned no one had actually seen my dog for at least 10 hours. I had to euthanize her with our regular vet two days later. I should have sued then. I swore I’d never return. Sadly my cat became ill and very quickly. With few regional options, I had no choice but to visit this emergency clinic again. You all should run screaming from this place. The situation was so outrageously hideous that we left without treatment and went elsewhere. Furthermore, while waiting to settle an invoice for absolutely zero treatment we saw shocking behavior on the part of the employees of this facility. Another client came in with a seriously ill cat that was not breathing properly. As a former tech and rescue volunteer of more than 30 years, I know exactly how serious respiratory distress is. This beloved pet should have been triaged immediately as urgent care. Not at the Newtown House of Horrors! These poor people waited an hour, with a dangerously ill pet, only to be told that (for some unexplained reason) they were being denied care and told to leave. I personally referred them to Guardian in Brewster and hope to god they got care. If by some chance they are reading this, those people should ABSOLUTELY CALL AN ATTORNEY and sue Newtown Veterinary Specialists. At a minimum, report them to Connecticut State Board of Veterinary Medicine. Also, for the record, bulletin boards of thank you notes in your exam rooms from people for whom you’ve euthanized beloved pets is NOT conducive to either confidence building or any form of security or comfort. It’s gruesome and stressful. Get a clue. Hire some decent and compassionate people. Upgrade your systems. If you can’t or are not inclined, do us all a favor and just close your doors.

Dr. DeLucia has been caring for our cat with insulin resistance and helped us diagnose a pituitary gland tumor. She has shown infinite patience and kindness as we navigate our options of radiation or surgery. Her responsiveness is exceptional and she is knowledgeable, professional and explains things clearly. I recommend her highly!
