How to Save Money at CareFur Veterinarians

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We are so fortunate to have the top notch veterinarians of Carefur in our area. They are skilled, caring, reasonably priced professionals in a state of the art facility. We visited this morning with Callahan our cat to have a hemotoma aspirated. We cannot speak highly enough of this group! Callahan the cat with her new "pretty" face is shown. Thank you Dr. Wood.

Dr Wood and his staff are AMAZING!!!!! I am conflicted with sending this review as I am afraid he will get bombarded with new clients and it will be difficult for us to get an appointment! However, I must do the review as I am so incredibly thankful for finding him and Dr Gross who also works at Guilford Veterinary Hospital. She is the reason I found Dr. Wood. She saved my dog's life when she came down with some sort of respiratory issue. This combined team, plus their staff are extraordinary. They spend the time to get to know your pet and they are truly vested in your pet's well being. I have never met a team of people who were so dedicated and compassionate.

I love this place, everyone has so much compassion and kindness towards your pet. All my questions were answered and I never felt rushed. They even helped put my elderly dog in the car. I left feeling very relaxed and happy that my boy was getting the best care.

What an awesome group of people! From the first woman who answered the phone through the Vet Tech's, and the Dr we spoke with. Everyone was friendly, communicative, supportive and truly animal people who have found their calling. Can thank you enough for taking care of my pup this afternoon. The facility was clean, bright, inviting and comforting. There wasn't a moment of doubt that we were in the right place for the care she needed.

I don't even know where to start singing praises about our experience so far at Care Fur in Madison. Being a reactive dog mom wasn't really on my radar, but here we are... my sweet sweet Saint Bernard Buster, all 180 pounds of fear reactivity mixed with every health problem you can think of can be a challenge. To even say the word vet put him AND myself into panic. But unfortunately having all the health problems he does, finding a vet we can work with is a priority. From my first phone call to them-- me broke down in tears out of frustration from past vet experiences, including putting off some care from seriously traumatizing visits-- I knew we were going to be OK here. Michelle just got me, understood, and I could tell she was genuinely empathetic. So we booked our first visit. Well I had no idea we would find ourselves basically having a red carpet put out for us on our first visit. Accommodating I find to be an understatement. The whole staff worked together to put me at ease, therefore calming my raging beast of a dog lol. Now the true Godsend was when Dr Wood came into the room. We call him (Dr Doolittle lol) Patient, kind, compassionate... and extremely in tune with Buster! His team, Hollie and Emma deserve huge kudos too! We always feel they care for Buster the same as they would their own pets. Over the course of a few visits, I can't even explain how magically things have changed with Busters health, and more importantly behavior. We are truly blessed to have found our furever animal team 💙
