How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

While I don't have a happy ending to my story, I did have an extremely positive experience with Banfield Monument during a challenging medical emergency with my 12 y.o. female cat. Dr. Claire Roberts was my assigned vet doc for my cat who had basically a terminal diagnosis. She maintained quick, thorough communication on test results throughout the day via phone and an impressive level of compassion and integrity when developing the best plan for my baby. The entire staff I encountered (the only vet tech name I remember is Rebecca, sorry!) were caring and there is clearly an "all hands on deck" approach where even the receptionists were aware of what was going on with my sweet girl. I will be seeing and trusting them again to establish primary care for her brother cat. Thank you, doctors and staff at Banfield for your honesty, guidance, and empathy during one of the most difficult decisions a person has to make. I appreciate you accommodating so many last minute appointments.

I was given an estimate to treat my Shiba Inu Nikki. Based on the Vet’s feedback, I decided the Banfield year plan was the best option. I did mention I had a savings account for Nikki while weighing all of my options. I was then asked by the Vet, how much I had saved up for Nikki in her savings account. I didn’t think much of it. The Vet did blood work and also additional blood work for Cushing disease. Poor Nikki was stuck by a needle so many times, I am not sure how she tolerated it. Turns out, the Vet wanting to do even more blood work than we originally talked about originally, even after she was tested for Cushing disease. It seem like she was trying to use up all of Nikki’s savings. I told her absolutely not!!! I was very upset. I refuse!!! I could see what she was trying to do. Turns out, I was told it was not necessary, once I put my foot down, to do the additional blood work, so it was a good call on my part. I am under the impression they work on commission. This happened months ago and I am still in disbelief a vet would order unnecessary blood work and put Nikki through a lot to find a vein. Unethical practices in my opinion!!! I decided not to go to the Monument location any more. The waiting time was horrible, over one hour and a half.

Before I start let me say that the vets and the techs here are AMAZING!! But the front desk staff are far from that….this is now the 3rd time that they have rescheduled an appointment for me because they never put it in the computer when I scheduled it in the first place. Their customer service is poor as they have attitude with you over the phone. then in person they take phone calls before the line of people waiting.

Tiffini was awesome. So much help and knowledge. Our little puppy's first visit is coming up and if Dr. Cordaro is as nice as Tiffini, we know our new pet will love them both!

Jennifer is amazing! We usually are nervous going to Banfield because it usually feels like we are being sold additional things but Jennifer was amazing today! She was so informative and kind and did not try to sell us on unnecessary things! She was informative and reassuring with the answers to our questions and was beyond friendly! I will be requesting her every time!
