How to Save Money at VRCC Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been taking my animals to VRCC for many years in various departments. They have always been kind and gentle with my animals. Just Saw Dr. Erika M. Pugh in cardiology and she's just lovely. My husky typically has 'white coat syndrome', but as you can see here, he fell in love with her at his visit for his echo cardiogram. I highly recommend VRCC for top notch care of your fur babies.

One of the hardest things this year was losing our husky Scout in august and it’s taken me awhile to do this but I have only good things to say about this place. Dr. Groth and her team are wonderful. They know what they are doing when it comes to your beloved pets and they really care. Losing Scout was heartbreaking but Dr Elizabeth gave us the time we needed to say our goodbyes. She was honest even though we knew it was his time to rest. I still cry because I miss him but I know they took good care of after it was all over. I trust this place, I can’t say the same for another vet we unfortunately brought Scout to when he first became 😷 if we just brought him here like we always did things might have been better for our dogs comfort. Thank you so much for caring for our Bubba and all the other pets that walk in that door. Much appreciate all you guys do for animals.

We've had a great experience with them so far treating our dog Paws for multiple myeloma. They are responsive, informative, and detail oriented with the entire patient experience. You will not have problems understanding the issue your dog or cat or animal is having because they give a lot of good information and detail to support their assessments. On our first visit, we were told that they had already talked with our veterinarian and looked over the records and lab results before we first came in. The details of the conversation between they and our Veterinarian that were shared with us indicated that the conversation with our vet was fairly thorough and a lot of questions were asked. They respected our time, they were friendly to us and empathetic at every step, and we felt comfortable in the expertise of those who were working with us. As someone in the animal health industry but with no affiliation to this practice, I highly recommend them.

Could not recommend this place more. Staff? Amazing little angels all running around being incredible at all times. Great at communicating and verifying, very much able to trust pretty immediately. Facility? Clean and very well kept, great waiting area that offers a little privacy to pet families. Also have charging chords for all phone types- so thoughtful! Service? Impeccable. This can not be an easy job, no matter what position you work here- even if you are passionate about animals and helping. A huge hats-off to this entire staff and the amazing facility and level of service they maintain!!

My cat ended up with a urinary blockage, and this place has been amazing. The people have been on top of it and have been willing to answer all of my nervous cat mom questions, probably a few times over, even when I have called after he got home. Literally, the only reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars is the price. They are one of the more expensive hospitals in town and worth it if you have the money, but if you are struggling like us, just be aware. We are still very grateful for them though!
