How to Save Money at VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place is well worth the fairly high priced but excellent treatment and well being of animals. The staff is friendly and efficient. I especially want to recognize the front desk receptionist Jessica B. for her professionalism, her overall friendliness and for explaining every process in great detail. My dog has surgery today, I know it will go well because he is in the caring hands of the staff here. Thanks VCA Alameda East!

Our cat, Sophie, had a scary neurological event happen suddenly and our usual ER Animal Hospital suggested we bring Sophie here to the VCA Alameda East hospital as they had neurological specialists who could help Sophie better. While this was a very scary and stressful situation for our family -- the admin team, techs, nurses, and vets that we saw went above and beyond to make sure Sophie was cared for, and they communicated frequently with us to keep us updated every step of the way. We especially had a wonderful team with Dr. Crawford at the helm, and Sophie's little recovery team gave so much love and attention to my cat (who loves a lot of attention) and treated her like one of their own. Sophie has since made a full recovery and I can't thank everyone at the VCA for helping Sophie get healthy again - every time I see her healthy and walking around, I am filled with appreciation.

This is beyond overdue! I have taken several of my pets to VCA Alameda East for care over the past 6+ years, unfortunately it has been for emergency visits and the outcome hasn't always been positive. Everyone I have encountered has been so caring and helpful. From the front desk, everyone was so amazing. They definitely cared about me and my pet in our time of need. The nurses are beyond compassionate. I can't speak enough about the quality of care I have received from all of the support staff. As for the doctors, I wish I could get the same quality of care with my personal doctor! My pets have been seen by multiple doctors there and each time I have been absolutely floored by their compassion and care, I will keep coming back....hopefully not any time soon (no offense 🤣). Thank you all Alameda East!!

I went to VCA Alameda ER back in August when my kitty Einstein wouldn’t stop vomiting and acting sick. The team at this place signed me in right away despite it being a very busy night there. After spending a couple hours there they had done an X-ray first to establish if he had any foreign objects lodged in his stomach. Unfortunately because it was late at night, the radiologist was no longer there and I had to take Einstein home for the night. However they had given him some anti nausea and painkiller meds that helped him be a bit less uncomfy. They called me very early the next morning around 5:30/6am to inform me that the radiologist said it looked like he had an object stuck in his digestive system and that they wanted to do an ultrasound to pinpoint exactly where it was. After all this, they reassured me that he would be okay if he got emergency surgery. The most unfortunate part of VCA Alameda is the high cost of all the services there, but they immediately suggested a low cost clinic near me that could do the surgery for about $6,000 cheaper. Einstein got the surgery done there and has recovered to his full health!! i want to thank VCA for being extremely gentle with me throughout the process, for moving this situation along quickly and professionally, and for suggesting other low cost options. I appreciate all of you there, and so does Einstein❤️

Wrath of Con

Dr. Minner and her team were so awesome! Everyone was so friendly and caring..... even the security guard!😁 On Sept 22nd, my Jack Russell was hit by a pickup. I called sobbing hysterically, trying to figure out where they were located. Melissa (I believe that was her name) was so patient with me. She stayed on the phone with me until I got there, calming me down while leading me in the right direction. She even had two vet assistants waiting for us as soon as we pulled up so my dog could get care ASAP. Dr. Minner examined my dog and came to talk to me right away. She gave both her doctor recommendations as well as necessary treatment moving forward. They kept a close eye on him and thank the Lord, my dog ran up to me like nothing happened. Thank you so much! 🥹❤️🙏🏾
