How to Save Money at GoodVets South Denver

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The technician and veterinarian were very transparent. They were very good about emergencies with my dog! He ate something he wasn't supposed to and they were able to fit him in the morning! They take care of all their patients that come through their doors! So far I have met 3 of their veterinarians and all of them have been very chill and incredibly knowledgeable. They are incredibly willing to clarify anything you have questions on via phone, online, or in person! They also give you in-depth instructions on paper as well! The other thing I really liked is that they give information on the issue that your pet has. For example my dog had giardia coming out of the shelter, and they taught me the things I needed to know about the parasite and what to look out for! They even gave me a journal that had researched it so I can continue to treat it if the parasite comes back!(Which it can unfortunately). They are also very good about send you your invoice so you can submit it to your pet insurance! All in all, they are awesome and I highly recommend them if you are on Evans or near DU!

Took my dog here a couple of times for a rash on his ear. Was prescribed a medication that barely helped. On the follow up visit the doctor, who was different than the one who prescribed it, said he’d never heard of the medication before and doesn’t know how it works. But suggested I buy another round and increase the dosage. I passed. At that same follow up visit, was time for his semi annual exam and vaccines. Was charged $88 for the exam, and all the doctor did was listen to his heart and breathing for maybe 30 secs. No oral exam, check of the ears, etc. I’ll be going to a different vet next time.

Very professional and welcoming staff from reception to vet and everyone in between. I felt well informed about the current health problem my cat is experiencing and also made aware of ways to best bolster his health in the future. Everyone made it very clear how time-critical different shots/procedures were and I felt well equipped to decide what to do right away, what to postpone, and what didn't fit given my cat's indoor-only life.

Front desk and the tech was awesome! I want to start this out with the positive. Front desk answered any of my questions, and was happy to help. My issue lay with one of the Doctors, who seemed pretty judgmental and right off the bat like he did not want to serve me or my partner despite the urgency of the situation. Throughout the appointment, we kept getting... ''But you'll want to go to a vet you trust.'' (Which is strange in itself, are you not trustworthy?) Despite us insisting the importance of a dental as soon as possible, (which he also agreed needed to be done ASAP) and the price point of our prior vet that we could simply not afford. To be honest, he did not seem empathetic at all, like he did not want to work with us, and he disregarded anything we said. Including the fact I am a prior ER veterinary technician of 5+ years. I was there to get my dog affordable care through their reasonable monthly plans. I would not recommend this location and have switched providers within the company as I signed up for a plan because it was the best option to get my dog the care she needed. I dont know if it was because im a person of color, because i'm a woman, or because i have a partner that he felt the need to passively turn us away. Either way, it was a bad experience and he clearly did not want our business.
