How to Save Money at Dumb Friends League Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Not only are they reasonable priced for cat fixes. I am so happy with outcome of this place! They were very knowledgeable and polite at drop off and pick up. I would highly recommend them for your pet needs. My kitten was very scared arriving there, but they were very understanding with him. I would bring all my animals here when needed.

This review is long overdue. Few months back my little dog managed to swallow what seemed to be the inside of a golf ball that was left out in the nearby park. He couldn't pass it. After going to a more corporate vet, one of the nurses pulled me aside and recommended I reach out to Denver Dumb Friend of league. This was the best advice I got. The staff at the CSU SPUR location we're top notch, friendly, empathetic, and just all around amazing. The surgery went smooth and they were able to get whatever it was out of my little guy for a fraction of what it would have cost me to go through a mainstream/corporate veterinarian system. I cannot thank this place enough for saving the life of my little dog, Token. I will be making contributions to the Denver Dumb Friends League yearly because of this. Wonderful people, wonderful causes, please support them in any way you can. *Also, If you're whacking golf balls in a park, please try to clean up after yourself 😉 (I've seen the shells of golf balls out and about in the park and it seemed to be inside of a golf ball that he got into)

I can't not express my gratitude for this amazing place filled with even more amazing humans. My dog underwent surgery that I could not have afforded without this amazing place. Dr. Martin is beyond amazing! My pup Nova and my family loves Dr. Martin and his staff and throughly enjoys going to the vet. They have also helped us with behavior issues and been nothing but the most caring people ever. I wish Nova could see Dr. Martin for everything as I can not express how amazing he is and would take him as our primary vet if possible . They are the whole package down to the little things like all the staff recognizing Nova, drawing on her medication bags to treating us with respect in every dealing and responding to every concern possible you could have as a parent that over worries . If you love your pets like children like me but do not make enough money to afford very expensive care but want to do the very best by your furbaby then I recommend this place above the rest. I can not express again how amazing of a team this organization has. Thank you so much for joining our pack and becoming family to Nova and the Gonzales family!

On Friday December 15th I took my 8 month old siamese kitty here that I purchased from the dumb friends league only 2 months prior. He was breathing rapidly I was told he had a fever and she gave him a kitty tylenol and said he sounded clear and she didnt hear no heart murmer and he should be fine so I took him home he seemed to be doing ok he was eating and drinking but still was breathing rapidly and on Christmas eve at 1:30 in the morning his breathing got so bad I had rush him to a Er Vet and they told me his lungs were filled with fluid and thats not normal and that he possibly had fip and that fluid in the lungs was not normal or reversible so I had no other option but to Euthanize him. It was a extremely traumatic experience especially being that is was Christmas eve. I had to pay out of pocket 400 dollars that i didnt have, to have him euthanized. Thanks alot dumb friends league i knew something was going on with him so i took him to you guys hoping to get an answer but yall dropped the ball and sent him home and said nothing was wrong.
