How to Save Money at Colorado Exotic Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Burger had a great first vet visit thanks to CEAH! The staff was kind, super knowledgeable, and even had a warm pad set up and ready for her so she wouldn’t get too chilly. Treatment plans were discussed clearly and helpfully. She’ll be a returning patient for sure.

I brought my bearded dragon snog here as no other vet in the Colorado Springs was able to see her soon enough and I was able to make an appointment the day after I called. Snog had incredibly puffy eyes that just weren’t getting any better and my vet had told me they were puffy due to a lack of vitamins but after snog was not getting any better I called around to other vets in the Springs and was told to call Colorado Exotic Animal Hospital. Five minutes into the appointment we were told snog most likely has congestive heart failure and she did. They immediately started her on heart medicine and after a month she started to get better her eyes became less puffy and she was able to eat her bugs again. We moved to Fort Collins and Snog started doing pretty bad so we took her back to the vet and unfortunately she passed on the night of the first. I wanted to write a review saying I appreciate the staff at Colorado Exotic Animal hospital they seemed to have cared a lot about Snog and her progress and everyone was incredibly nice throughout all of Snogs treatment. The vets that saw snog clearly care about their work and I am grateful for everything that they did to help Snog they were able to give her a good last few months of life where she was happily eating hornworms and raspberries. If you have a reptile this vet is an amazing choice. Thank you to entire staff for everything you did for Snog and I :)

If I could give higher than 5 stars I would. Staff is amazing, very friendly, loves seeing all the animals, and always takes the time to answer questions and always puts the needs of the patient first. I love knowing that when I bring in my animals they are getting the best possible care.

Everybody was very kind and welcoming and treated my iguana like a king! I really appreciated how everyone there loved Jimbo and made me feel like they really care about the animals they work with. I felt like he was in great hands there. Maddi, Dr. Ruoff, and Ray were all very kind and compassionate!

I can't say enough about the incredible staff at COEAH. If you don't want to read my novel of a review, just know that you need not look further for an exotic animal vet. COEAH is the absolute best exotic animal vet in Denver. Every person I've had the pleasure of interacting with at COAEH is the most caring, genuine, compassionate human - these people have a place in my heart forever. On a Saturday morning in July, I discovered my bearded dragon, Viceroy, had developed a case of tail rot. I didn't know where to go or what to do, and I'm SO grateful COEAH was the first vet that popped up on Google. I called, sobbing and panicking, and was immediately met with such kindness and understanding from Ray at the front desk. Ray got me a same-day appointment, and in less than two hours from my call Viceroy and I were in their office. Maddie the vet-tech was the second person I met - she was so honest, gentle, and kind with me and Viceroy while I cried in their office. She showed me pictures of her snake (who had just gone through tail rot, too) and her beardie, and assured me that I wasn't a terrible reptile-mom. Maddie and Dr. Lykins explained the treatment process in a way that was clear and compassionate, and removed the bad part of his tail same day. The procedure was quick and went perfectly, and they both made sure I had everything I needed for follow-up care. Maddie even drew a cute picture of Viceroy on the paper bag. Two weeks later, Viceroy's tail rot follow-up appointment, Dr. Lykins noted his tail was healing beautifully, but we discovered he had developed an abscess on his femoral pore. Dr. Lykins was (again) so clear and helpful and removed the abscess same day. Maddie taught me everything I needed to know about follow up, and again drew an adorable picture of him on the bag with his medication. Dr. Lykins was always available via email for questions and updates, which made me feel so cared for and comfortable. Unfortunately, two weeks later, the abscess filled up again and required another procedure. This time he was seen by Dr. Ruoff, who was also so kind and helpful and took great care of Viceroy. Maddie taught me how to give Viceroy his injectable antibiotics (which I was terrified to do!) and gave me all the guidance I needed to continue his follow up care. Two weeks later, the saga ended, and Viceroy now has a clean bill of health! I will be forever grateful for all of the care, compassion, helpfulness, and honesty from everyone at COAEH. They not only made me feel welcomed and comfortable, they always loved up on Viceroy and made him feel like a beardie-celebrity. The past few months were incredibly scary and unfamiliar for me, and I can't imagine how we would've managed without this team. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, Dr. Lykins, Maddie, Dr. Ruoff, Ray, and Natalie.
