How to Save Money at VCA Briargate Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot express the absolute gratitude i have for this place. I was a wreck thinking my rat was dying and had called 4 other places to see if anyone could work on her ASAP. I called the office and the receptionist heard my concern. She went to see if any of their vets knowledgeable with rats would take us and they did within 15min. They took my rat back, gave her the attention and care she needed, and consulted us on what our next steps would be. She ended up needing antibiotics and to be quarantined for 7-10days. She has made a full recovery and is spunky as ever! I was prepared to leave with a dead rat, but they gave her every chance they had. I will forever recommend this office to anyone with pets that they see. The kindness and care from Dr. Seth and his team was exceptional. Thank you all for saving my rat and keeping me together when I was a mess.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. Everyone here is kind and caring and pleasant. I've seen a few of the dictors and they are all absolutely fantastic! My absolute favorite, though, is Dr. Flenniken. He is the first vet to handle my naughty chihuahua without a muzzle and some trauma! I'll never go anywhere else.

I was a bit reluctant to move my pet's care to a VCA clinic, but this clinic blew my expectations out of the water in a very short amount of time. I've only had 2 appointments with my youngest pup, Riley, but the staff has been amazing each and every time (even when I miss-scheduled an appointment)! I typically receive judgment for how I raise my pets (home cooked meals and waiting to spay), but Dr. Mulkins made it clear that she just wants to make sure the pets she treats are healthy and happy. She was very attentive and hands-on with Riley and answered every question I had and alleviated any concerns I had about future treatment plans. I lost 2 beloved dogs in the worst way over the past few years, so I appreciate the level of care my little girl has seen from Dr. Mulkins and the rest of VCA Briargate staff so far.

I can’t believe I have not posted a review about VCA yet! I really thought I did so here is my very much delayed review. Dr Rothstein and their staff saved my dogs life. He had a bad reaction to something he took back in October and their team cared for him and got him back on track. I feel like everybody we’ve come in contact with here has been great. Their staff is friendly, attentive, and I feel like they truly do care about my dog, Ranger. We’ve been here many times over the last few years (dental, surgeries, scans, medicine, tests, lots of different things since my dog is a senior and has had a variety of issues come up) and had a great interaction every time. Thank you to everybody at VCA Briargate, we really appreciate you and Ranger does too!

I'm so disappointed in the care my dog received in this clinic. We initially brought him in for issues with his paws and we thought he had an underlying infection. We were told he had no infection and they gave him a diagnosis of luxating patella with no grade. We were denied multiple diagnostics and told they had run a full blood panel on him. Come to find out it was not a full blood panel. We were denied antibiotics because Dr Sunderman "didn't like giving them" and she said there was no infection present. We then took hiim in again and he saw Dr. Rothstein. He spent more time with our dog but ultimately ended up backing up his colleague and prescribed the same meds that were just not helping him. Although my dog has luxating patella, it ultimately was not the culprit in why he was unable to sleep, lay down or have any peace over the course of a month. It was very hard watching our dog suffer and we had no choice but to get a second opinion. It's been less than 24 hours since taking him to a competent vet and he is already getting back to his sweet self. We had a total of 3 trips to VCA with no real help for my boy and plenty of money spent. Leaving infection untreated could have killed my dog and I'm so glad we used our logic to get that second opinion. Please save yourself time, money and heartache and take your fur babies elsewhere. Nothing worse than doctors who won't listen but will take your money.
