How to Save Money at Southern Rockies Animal Emergency + Specialty

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Let me start by saying I have worked in this field for a long time, and I had just moved to CO this last week so unfortunately I had not been able to establish a new vet for my fur babies just yet. This place was able to get me and my sweet rabbit in for an emergency euthanasia. The care they provided from start to finish was excellent. I was very nervous since this was new to me being on the other side of the euthanasia, (not being the one to place his IV catheter, etc) the receptionist answered every question I had with patience and understanding, the technicians were beyond kind and compassionate and the doctor was wonderful as well. They gave me all the time I needed and I could tell they cared about the animals in their care. They answered every question I had and made this hard time as easy as they possibly could for us. So from the bottom of my heart thank you to the entire team. You are all amazing.

We drove up from Pueblo on a Sunday. We expected a wait because this is not somewhere that you can schedule an appointment. Other pets in more critical condition arrived after us and understandably were seen sooner as they were more of a priority. We were there approximately 3 hours. A little pricey but we expected that as well since this was an emergency. They took great care of our Rocky and we felt that they genuinely cared about our pet. Gave good after care instructions and medication. Thank you for everything!

If I could give 10 stars I would because this place went above and beyond my expectations we took our German Shepard puppy here when he started vomiting I have two other dogs who have had blockages so that’s what I thought I was dealing with. I immediately brought him in and we were put in the back room within a few minutes. The wait time was about an hour, but coming from a person who lived in the middle of nowhere in Michigan that’s nothing compared to what I’ve dealt with before, they ran some tests and turns out my boy had Pavo this is something I’ve never dealt with and I made that very clear. The staff was extremely supportive. My boy Stayed in the ICU for the weekend and was able to come home the following Monday he was a little rough but with the medication and support from the staff at the hospital, he had an amazing recovery so fast of a recovery our routine vet was shocked that he had such a fast turnaround time. My husband is active duty military and he would call at two or three in the morning just to get an update and I myself would call every couple hours and every time besides maybe once or twice everybody was extremely helpful and answered any questions or concerns even a week after we left the hospital thank you thank you thank you.

Unacceptable behavior. Horrible attitude from the front desk. Maya the technician was amazing, kind, respectful and caring. Dr. Driscoll was kind, intelligent and was able to provide help for my dog. The two woman working this night shift ( front desk ) have been absolutely horrendous and unacceptable customer service skills. We have been waiting 3 hours and have not even gotten close to getting my pet in a comfortable situation…. Unbelievable and unacceptable….. It’s so sad they have only one technician helping several pets at night during emergency hours. do not come here unless it’s your last resort ….

My dog, my friend, Rocky, started acting strange and having problems breathing. I ended up taking him into Powers Pet Emergency early on a Sunday morning. The staff was fantastic and gave my dog immediate care and attention. When it was all said and done, Rocky took a turn for the worse and did not make it. It was heartbreaking and crushing. That being said, Dr. Driscoll and her staff did a wonderful job taking care of things and providing me with an opportunity to say goodbye to my dog before he passed. They did everything they could to make him comfortable and give me transparent guidance. Thank you...
